Kid wants to take algebra 1. What are the chances if we appeal the middle school.
86 IOWA is where DD didn’t put lottery answers on questions she didn’t solve.

This is spot on for my DD as well with below cutoff Iowa score and 578 SOL. Interested in her chances as well. Could someone post their experiences with MS name, please? Did you ask the ES math teacher to recommend?

I am the above PP. My child has been accepted!
Thanks to this forum! It was a long shot but they tested her and found ready.

This is the same spot didn’t make Iowa cut off so could you please explain what type of test middle school has tested to found ready and got accepted.

There is no test in middle school. You either pass both the tests in 6th or you don’t. The two tests are the SOL and IAAT/Iowa.

I think they're asking because a PP said that "they tested her and found (him/her) ready".

I am the PP whose child was accepted into algebra 1. I wrote to the middle school principal stating her SOL score and other details. At her middle school they asses. Math 7hn teacher asses the student. This is standard practice I didn’t know of. My child was moved to algebra 1 during the first week of school.

As far as I know, there is no further testing, as decisions on math placement are made over the summer. PP, if you have a child with a high SOL score but below cutoff IAAT, appeal to the MS. Chances are good they'll make it. I have posted here before that DD's MS took kids that missed the cutoff for IAAT, SOL, or both, into Algebra I. They even have one kid that missed both cutoffs by a large margin in Algebra I.

What would be needed to take algebra in 6th grade?

The track for that starts in 5th grade (I think), and is not offered by all schools. Where it is offered, I believe you need high CogAT scores, and perfect or near perfect grades and SOLs. The one kid I know who's on this track, had 600s on all her SOLs, straight 4s on the report card, and a CogAT score of 154.
