6th grade SOLs

SOLs were posted on SIS today. Did your 6th graders get a good score? I’m still not sure I want mine to take Algebra in 7th. He got 543 on the SOL which is good but I’m guessing others get close to 600, huh?

I’ve heard unless your kid got 96 or higher on Iowa, not to bother with Algebra on 7th. FWIW, my kid got a pass advanced on math, but it was lower than 543. Mine is not doing Algebra next year. Iowa was below 90.

My kid got 93 on IOWA, and didn't pass advanced on SOL

ETA, my kid got passed advanced on 6th grade SOL last year in 5th.

I would think that’s a good enough score that combined with a decent IAAT, would indicate taking Algebra I next year is not a bad thing.

IDK! I can share anecdotally that I have a true math kid - loves it, might want to major in it, just seems wired that way (no outside enrichment in math). My child got a 567 - not sure I’d consider that close to 600 but maybe you do? 543 seems good to me. At a certain point it is just splitting hairs.

That seems unusual. How far below 500 was your child?

My kid got:

IOWA: 93
Math SOL: 551

We asked the teacher what he thought. He said without a doubt our kid should take Algebra in 7th.

My kid had covid during the initial test day, but said the makeup day was crazy and they were rushing them. He only scored a 490 on the SOL, but he was in the 99th percentile on the IAAT. I think the 99th percentile on the IAAT is closer to his aptitude. Is there a way to appeal? I have a message into the school as well.

What you are saying means they will use last year's score of 6th grade SOL (an AAP 5th grader takes SOL 6th grade) and this past January IOWA test score to determine the eligibility of Algebra in 7th?

FWIW, at least two kids in DD's class got notified that they're eligible for Algebra I by the MS, although they missed either the SOL cutoff, or the IAAT cutoff, narrowly. So it does happen, and it doesn't hurt to ask the MS.

DD got higher scores in both, and when I asked the teacher, she basically gave me a pro-con list!

If your kid is in AAP math and getting good grades, they can handle Algebra. I don't know why people in this area act like Algebra is sooooo difficult. In my private school, we all took Algebra in 7th grade as just a normal thing. You all are acting like it's Calculus III. It's literally x^2 + 2x -3 = 5. So scary...

Not worried about Algebra I. Worried about kid having to do Matrix and Multivariable as a senior, both of which I think are best learned in college (along with Calc), and probably completely unnecessary for anyone not wanting to go into hard sciences/engineering/math.
