Usually appeals are allowed with borderline scores. 90 IOWA and PA on SOL or like 99 percent IOWA and 498 SOL. I have not seen anyone with IOWA scores in 80s get in on appeal. |
Long shot, but you have nothing to lose by trying. |
What is the official threshold on the IOWA test? |
What is the official threshold on the IOWA test?

92 91st percentile, actually. |
Anyone whose kid just finished Algebra I in 7th? If they had high scores 98+ percentile on Iowa and 550+ on SOLs, how’d they do in algebra? |
My kid just finished, and actually had 98th percentile on the IIAT and 49X on the SOL. We appealed, he got it, and breezed through the honors Algebra course with high A's. He actually studied, however, which was a new thing for him. |
This is spot on for my DD as well with below cutoff Iowa score and 578 SOL. Interested in her chances as well. Could someone post their experiences with MS name, please? Did you ask the ES math teacher to recommend? |
This thread has been very helpful. DD got 98% on Iowa and a 560 on SOL and wants to take Algebra because she likes math. What's the process for signing up for Algebra in 7th? Do we have to do something, or are they automatically placed into Algebra if they passed both tests? |
We got a math placement email from our middle school (RRMS) telling us our child met criteria for algebra and would be placed there unless we prefer Math 7 Honors in which case we need to notify them of preference for Math 7 by June 13. |
I don’t know why someone parents are so hung up on whether to take Algebra I in 7th. It’s not that difficult and if your kid qualifies, should just take it. I actually support opening up Algebra for anyone who wants to take it, several (Asian) countries start learning proper algebra and geometry from 5th/6th grade it self. My older kid said algebra was really easy, but geometry can be a little tricky and needed practice around proofs and logic/reasoning sections (got high As and 580+ in both sol). My 4th grader is already doing linear equations at kumon and once the kids understand (well, I had to help/explain whenever new topics come) the concepts, it’s not that difficult to pick up. So a 7th grader already in advanced math track, should not find it difficult. Go for it! |
I think they will be automatically placed unless you request for them not to be. We are RCMS and haven't heard anything at all, but DS was well above cut off scores for both, and plans to take Alg 1. |
Dang that explains it asian countries accelerate math and have high stakes testing for ha college and employment None of that is true or matters in the USA. The sooner first generation Asians learn the actual culture the better off for everyone. All this acceleration prepping and tj insanity can finally stop |
Look around and you will see that first gen americans and immigrants pretty dominate the higher education and stem related jobs in us. You want to increase this device further instead of trying to narrow the gap? I hope American more parents encourage their kids to pursue stem education and provide the support they need. |
This is exactly opposite of what America needs. We need more kids interested in stem and not worry about immigrants coming and taking over. Learn to compete and not suppress others. I hope you are encouraging your kids to pursue stem and not here because you are worried asians will take over if math are a more focus for tj. 😀 |
