Drugs at Hardy (?)

I have no idea how many Uber rich kids go to DCPS but at Hardy there are a handful and most kids know who they are. One family flies a private jet and owns 3-4 houses. Apart from this family there are several others who own houses in the Palisades/Foxhall along with one other summer/beach house.

Oh my God, homeowners who have a beach house? In MY public school? Heaven forfend. I don't want my kids having anything to do with such wealth. What if our families became friends and they invited us to the beach? We might catch rich.

Spoken like a classic clueless DC elite who completely downplays and dismisses the ridiculous and excessive amounts of (generational) wealth it takes to own both a multimillion dollar house in the Palisades as well as another in OBX or wherever else it is y’all hang. It’s funny how you think we WANT to hang out with you at your beach house. Lol. No thanks. Im good slumming it at the weekly rental condo in Ocean City.

Trust me - we live in DC. We don’t send our kids to DCPS and zero chance we’d own a house in the OBX, but nice try. Signed - rich in DC.

New poster here. I went to NCS and I never ever encountered drugs or smoking in the bathroom or anywhere in school buildings.

Not in the main buildings but it was definitely there in the smaller spaces and the gardens. I imagine it’s even easier now because vapes are easier to hide and harder to detect. As I said in another thread about drugs in private schools, the Close is not a magical bubble no matter how much parents wish it were.

The cathedral in Bishop’s Garden were off campus when I went there. I think they’re on campus now. Yes, some outliers had reps of going to someplace like the bishops garden to smoke, but they were usually social outcasts and there weren’t many who would do that.

You must be about 12.

Vaping where? If outside, they are only being unhealthy to themselves. That does not make them “bad.”

Personally, if true, I find the drug use concerning. Apparently overdose deaths among 10-14 tripled between 2010 and 2014 due to opiods. Right now it's low risk marijuana chewables but those are a gateway drug, and a child reckless enough to use them at school may try something else. Also i wonder who is the source for these drugs and what else that person may be offering.

I meant tripled between 2019 and 2020.

The linked article gives no information about actual prevalence. It could be there were three deaths in 2020 and one n 2019. They go on to talk about "pre-teens and teens" but that's anyone under the age of 20.

I agree PP - I’m not as cavalier about it for these reasons too.

But it is the parents like OP who are naive & idealistic whose kids are the ones flying under the radar and doing drugs because the parent is naive.

I fully expect there is drug use at all middle schools and high schools including my kids because that was the case 30-40 years ago when I was in school.

And I fully expect some among the crowd my kids are in will experiment, possibly including my own kids, because I and many others did at the same age.

Having said that in net my guess is that there is a lot less drinking (which concerns me a lot more than pot smoking) and drug use than when I was growing up.

But there wasn’t drug use at *all* middle and high schools back then, which is why some of us expect better.

Yeah expecting middle schoolers to act like this is a bit weird. They're just kids, I would expect this at all. Maybe in high school, but not younger

Sorry to break it to you, but you must have been in a TERRIBLE school. Yes some kids were smoking weed and doing harder drugs in maybe 10th-12th grade in the 90s, but MIDDLE SCHOOL? Before they're even a TEENAGER? Maybe that happened in middle school in like, the projects, but that's about it

Doggywhistle alert.

DP: This happened at my blue ribbon suburban middle school.

Was going to post the same thing. I was one of the bored wealthy kids at my wealthy suburban middle school smoking pot and drinking beer in 7th grade.

I don't get it, how are kids so bored at such young ages? You're a kid, go have fun being a kid.

Right? Kids should model their parents and spend their evenings on anonymous forums. Much safer

It means I’d be much more worried about my kids hanging on chat rooms with strangers than hanging out with their friends and smoking.
