No need for stupid sarcasm.

It is a legitimate policy debate about how universities should admit students and whether transparent college admissions cutoffs using purely academic performance is in fact the most equitable and fair way to admit students and also the most socially-beneficial to motivate students to learn the most during high school.

Because actually every other country in the world, i.e. 94% of the world's population does it that way, including lots of multi-racial and multi-ethnic countries and many countries with Black majorities and many countries with Hispanic majorities, many countries with White majorities and all Asian countries as well.

That’s right. You are a PARENT. You pay taxes. You have have a voice. You can criticize any aspect of education in VA that you want.

You go talk to that manager!

The difference is that students at universities are ADULTS. Students in elementary/middle/high school are MINORS.

Or are you one of those "PARENTS" that thinks your college kid is still a "CHILD?"

For in state admissions I want a formula. Kid took these classes, got these grades, got that SAT, then guaranteed admission to UVA or WM or Vtech or whatever other VA state school, end of story. Otherwise you are not getting my tax dollars.

Sounds like what you really want is a guarantee that your kid gets into UVA. Here's a cheaper, faster, more practical solution: open your mindset to seeing success at many VA colleges. Trust that your kid is capable enough to be successful wherever he or she goes!

It's liberating when you expand the number of acceptable pathways!

OP refers to her “KID” so she’s in “PARENT” mode.

Or should we say “KARENT”.

There is an admissions guarantee at UVA, but as PP have pointed out, a lot of people won't even consider it worthy of their kid. They list courses and grades needed for guaranteed admission.

Here admissions committees are allowed to be racist, discriminatory, and they openly favor children of alumni, children of billionaire donors, and children with no particular academic strength who happen to be good at sports.

It's disgusting, and yet, the brain-washed American people continue to believe it's a great "holistic" system and they beggar themselves or their children to get in, instead of voting for politicians who might make university low-cost, like in other developed countries.

You have this backward. Kind of completely. Holistic allows in more URMs. A numbers game and the school would be 100% Asian and White. That is the racist system. As for the other things you mention -- if you think kids of the rich and powerful are not getting into European Universities because they tested low or had low grades you are crazy.

So ignorant and offensive to claim not a single URM can get into UVA without a preferential treatment. Anyway, it should be up to Virginia voters to decide if they want their public universities to discriminate on any basis other than academic achievement.

Possibly offensive to you but certainly not ignorant. All numbers based.

This is not the way any college selects students. Why would you want that. There is no formula.

UT is required to do just that by state law. Virginia could impose the same standards on state schools if they choose to

No they can't UT is not UVA. Size matters.

Holistic admissions was started to discriminate against Jews.

It was not. This is flat wrong. Holistic admission was started only in the last 30 years. Legacy was started to keep Jews out. But now that is not the case.

Totally wrong - holistic was started by president Elliott at Harvard to keep Jews out in the 1920s. Before that Harvard had written entrance exams and the Jews were doing too well. So they first tried capping the places but then they just scrapped the tests completely. Sound familiar?

FYI:"child" is defined as son or daughter e.g., All my children are married. Or are you one of those cold, impersonal grand"PARENTS" that calls your kid "offspring"? Even into 20s, parental income is factored into in-state tuition eligibility, so yes it is VERY relevant.

You are dead wrong here. The black TJHSST alum (from race-blind numbers game days) and black Jefferson scholars and black out-of-state students and black NSBE members were crazy smart. They ran circles in intelligence to a couple >GASP< white women's studies and white English majors and white male wrestlers and well, also black African-American studies majors. Legacies had higher average SATs while having their admission and ability questioned, but got stuck going to the family school and the "best days of my life". (You should read the Emory/Tufts thread if you think being a legacy is utopia.) One legacy Echols scholar got one of the highest GPAs and got full ride to Medical School. Most bigoted/supremacist post of the day.

When was this? i grew up in CA too (graduated high school in 93) and never heard of this "formula." We were all left hanging until late March/early April when admission packets were mailed out.

I remember the formula but I am old. My best friend just missed it.
