I want transparency and accountability from UVA

So roughly the top 3 percent of 400 got in?

Totally agree. UVA is pretty easy to predict. Top 5% in your class, you're in. Top 10% and you ED with strong scores, and everything else, probably in.

Hasn't worked (yet) for my kid, who was deferred after applying EA, is easily in the top 5% of his class with high rigor, has a 35 ACT score, and is completely surrounded by green on the Naviance scattergrams. We'll see what happens when RD comes out in the spring, but his deferral was definitely a headscratcher for me (and him!)

I understand OP. It's frustrating that you pay a lot in taxes, and your kid can't even go to the state flagship.

And your friends/family in other states ask "Well why don't they just got to UVA?" when you tell them the other school (private, out of state, or other Virginia public university) your kid goes to...

Most of the top 5% got in but not all. DD's best friend who was top 5% was waitlisted or deferred (I forget which) during EA and ended up going somewhere else and withdrew her app. My DD who was top 7% got in but also did ED whereas the others ranked higher than her that did not get in, did not do ED.

Here admissions committees are allowed to be racist, discriminatory, and they openly favor children of alumni, children of billionaire donors, and children with no particular academic strength who happen to be good at sports.

It's disgusting, and yet, the brain-washed American people continue to believe it's a great "holistic" system and they beggar themselves or their children to get in, instead of voting for politicians who might make university low-cost, like in other developed countries.

Same happened to my DC (Presidential scholar candidate, NMF,, GPA above their 75% percentile, fabulous EC, blah blah blah) but ultimately got in RD. Some people said it was yield protection, which may be true because DC ended up elsewhere.

Yep. I think the VA schools are pretty clear. UVA pretty much a solid chance as long as you are top 5% in your class. VT is actually more problematic since they seemed to yield protect a lot more last year, although a lot of those kids eventually got offered spots off the waitlist.

VA Tech is way harder to predict. Lots of head scratching.

How would you know if you were top 5% in your class if the school doesn’t do school rank?

Agree

The difference is the other countries have national curriculum so the GPAs are more comparable. Here, each district is different.

For in state admissions I want a formula. Kid took these classes, got these grades, got that SAT, then guaranteed admission to UVA or WM or Vtech or whatever other VA state school, end of story. Otherwise you are not getting my tax dollars.

This is not the way any college selects students. Why would you want that. There is no formula.

You have this backward. Kind of completely. Holistic allows in more URMs. A numbers game and the school would be 100% Asian and White. That is the racist system. As for the other things you mention -- if you think kids of the rich and powerful are not getting into European Universities because they tested low or had low grades you are crazy.

It’s the rigor that kills me most. Top 5% at Langley is what a 4.8 and 15 APs? But if you’re in rural western Virginia, a 4.0 and 3 APs will do it? The FCPS curriculum is the same so it seems beneficial to go to the lowest performing high school with the bonus of cheaper housing.
