You need not worry about these small details. Look around at the trends around the country and the world and you can clearly see where we are headed. If not red today, it will be by next week. Why go through the confusion of a few days in-person only to wind up virtual next week. By early-mid February, the 12 to 15s will be boosted and then, it will make sense for high school and maybe middle school to be in-person again. Assuming that MCPS is smart enough to implement more measures in the building to optimize healthy air - which they have still failed to do!

The pro-virtual crowd is always raising the bar on what is necessary for in-person schooling. Why? There have not been mass outbreaks associated with school reopening. If you want to find things to shut down, go to the mall or the bars or some other non-essential service.

+1 Once again, schools are the first to close but bars in Pike and Rose have shoulder to shoulder maskless patrons for happy hour.

This.

Happy hour is safe in MoCo. Opening schools will lead to widespread death and overwhelmed the hospitals.

Such a joke.

??? I am pro-virtual for January, but can't imagine anyone FAKING a positive Covid test to achieve that goal. No family would ever wish to single themselves out like this, especially as they might not get the outcome they wish for, at least immediately, and so their child might end up without virtual instruction, stuck at home.

Not only do I disagree with you, OP, but I find your reasoning to be completely off, and quite mentally unhealthy.

It concerns me that you are projecting your own lack of ethics on others. You're only thinking this because it wouldn't bother you to lie yourself...

You voted for this and now you’re reaping the consequences. This is what happens.

Why are we prolonging this? At the rate things are going, all schools will be in the red in just a matter of time. I am not pro virtual by any means. I WANT us to be in school, but clearly, that's just not the reality in this county right now under the current circumstances. Why not just do what PG did--go to virtual for two weeks and put an end to this madness?!? I understand MoCo put their neck out there and said they won't go virtual unless ordered by the Governor, but at this point, slow walking it isn't any better and just leads to confusion and disruption. Set a date for two weeks from now, close schools until the date and get everyone back up and running by then. That way we're all on the same page, we all have a date to look forward to and we can stop wondering if/when our school will be entering red, especially since county hasn't provided any criteria on reopening schools that end up red. At least PG just shut it down for two weeks and committed to opening again after 14 days. As a parent of a little one who just wants to be in freaking school and nearly cried yesterday when he realized school would be closed yet a second day in a row, I just want some stability and certainty instead of having to check each day to see where my kid's school is.

Oh you need to stop. Nobody is faking positive tests.
You know very well there is an active movement from parents not to report positive cases so schools stay open and Pilates classes can continue for parents.

Nobody is reporting a fake Covid positive. But maybe they should.
Honestly, it never occurred to me but we need to counterbalance the right wing nuts who want kids in school no matter what the risk.
I think your post may have given us an idea that we can use if MCPS keeps under reporting.

And what is the risk exactly in keeping kids in school? Seriously people who want to close schools have no logical case any longer. Every single argument can be refuted with data.

+1 Students and staff have not been in schools for two weeks. How pray tell did 5% of the school population spread Covid in school? Impossible.

For the 11 schools that closed, most are high FARMS schools. It’s not stay at home moms or work from home dads that have been disproportionately affected to find childcare by the closures. These are also communities that depend on the Free and Reduced Meal program, so was there information from Dr. McKnight at today’s news conference as to how students will receive the breakfast and lunch they normally get? (Sorry I missed it because unlike MCPS, I was at work).

MCPS was grossly inadequately prepared to return to school after winter break. Central Office should have been planning during winter break instead of everyone taking a vacation. Quit trying to cheat students out of in person learning. Add instructional days to the calendar to make up for every day a school in MCPS is virtual.

I agree with this approach - all in person or none. It’s not like the majority of the county schools are that far off of 5% at this point. Move online for two weeks if we must and add two weeks of in person learning to the calendar.

All MCPS cares about is not upsetting unions and cheating students out of the required days for in person instruction.

How long does this go on for? For the rest of the year we have to watch this stupid dashboard? This is what makes me uneasy and feel hopeless that this isn't some effort to go virtual for a longer period of time. As long as the school continues to stay red based on their inaccurate data, then we're stuck, aren't we?

Anonymous wrote:OP, I think we can push MCPS to only close for staff shortages. If kids are testing positive in sky-high percentages, they'd be too sick to attend any kind of school, in-person or virtual. And if there aren't enough staff, close them, period. None of this virtual nonsense.

My kid is positive and has zero symptoms. He can definitely do virtual. And other kids are in quarantine and have no symptoms. They also can do virtual.

The only district in the country that came up with this bats#t insane methodology.

You seem to be forgetting that there are parents that don’t intend to send their kids to school even if they are open.

Whoa. What?! That is some serious conspiracy theory stuff. I and many other parents are very concerned about covid transmission post holidays, but people have only talked about keeping their own kids home or hoping for a few virtual days out or precaution. The whole idea that someone would fake a positive to close schools is ludicrous . No one wants to close schools. That is crazy talk.

I am more concerned that families will under report because they don't want to have to get a dr to sign off on reeentry.

The poster pushes conspiracy theories is a troll. Same person who posts all those anti-teacher posts.

So let me get this straight—if my kid in Green school gets Covid, he has to sit at home for 10 days doing absolutely nothing bc let’s face it, he’s not going to attend random virtual school or academy or whatever they’re calling it with kids and teachers he doesn’t know, but my other kid in Red school gets to attend virtual school like 2020 with her teachers and peers in their virtual classrooms like normal. Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I’m hoping my green school goes red quickly so we can just continue on with learning. Let’s all go red and get this over with in two weeks. Ugh

They have weekly pick ups for virtual kids for food.

It is interesting how they choose the schools. Funny how people like you worry about kids now but prior to covid, never seemed to care. These family always struggle with child care and yet, somehow seem to work it out.

It sounds really well thought out. You really don't know what you're talking about.
