Who keeps a dog in a crate 24/7?!

I'm a veterinarian. This story is not uncommon. Certainly not a troll I'm very sorry to say.

Welp here ya go an article that shows exactly how horrible some people are to dogs. OP is a Saint compared to these examples. TW: animal abuse

Op, give up the dog. It’s cruel. We really wanted a puppy but have refused to get one for this reason. No time. Maybe once kids are grown and in college, but for now you’re clearly stressed and with hands full. Do you and the dog a favor by rehoming

This brought back a flood of memories. My sweet malamute lived on the edge of a 4-ft chain 24/7 until animal control seized him from his POS owner. He was sitting on death row in a tiny shelter when he was miraculously saved a day before he would have been put down. He was a bag of bones when I first saw him yet he wouldn’t stop smiling and wagging his tail. He filled out into this magnificent traffic-stopping beast and we had 9 wonderful years before he died due to arthritis. The casual cruelty humans are capable of never ceases to boggle my mind.

OP, you were looking for advice on how to convince your husband to take adequate care of the dog. That is a non starter. If he won’t, you need to take responsibility. Pooping in the crate is a sign of MASSIVE stress. No healthy dog does that normally. Take the dog to a no-kill shelter. Just surrender the ownership and deal with the consequences for your marriage. Don’t prolong a situation you know is cruel.

What did you end up doing, OP? Check back in with us in DCUM land. We are worried about your dog.

+1. Dog daycare and dog walker in the meantime if he won't move it to a foster home.

Crating a dog that much is abusive. It is bad for them physically and mentally.

Call animal control on your DH anonymously! Maybe they will eventually take the dog or mandate paying for a walker

Yes, OP needs to have surrendered the dog already.

How is that possible? Won’t OP get in trouble?

Also not trusted to not poop and pee around the house (heck, he pooped in his own crate this morning).

If he is in the crate 23 hours, where else is he going to poop?

Gosh this is awful! Animal abuse! Please OP puppy proof a room at least. The dog will go mentally insane and then he’ll be worse behaved. Imagine being confined to a tiny area for most of your life.

This is why I hate crates.

Shouldn’t sell such products because of cruel and/or dumb people.

Lolol. There is nothing wrong with crate training a dog you weirdo.

Op is the dog gone yet?

OP is most likely not a troll. I have known plenty of people who have kept their dogs crated or tied to a post outside at all times. Yes, it’s terribly cruel and defeats the purpose of owning a dog, but people do it.
