Tiktok is getting more and more extreme.
We were warned about what crimes TikTok is planning by Fairfax County schools: “ Dear Families, We have been made aware of a series of new monthly challenges that have been shared across the social media platform TikTok. Last month the “Devious Licks” challenge emerged, and students committed acts of vandalism on school property. Now, these challenges are escalating and harming people. Here is the full list: September: Vandalize school bathrooms October: Smack a staff member November: Kiss your friend’s girlfriend at school December: Deck the halls and show your ***** January: Jab a breast February: Mess up school signs March: Make a mess in the courtyard or cafeteria April: “Grab some eggz” (another stealing challenge) May: Ditch day June: Flip off in the front office I want to be clear, these are not fun, harmless challenges. These are crimes with very serious consequences. Students who commit these acts face disciplinary action under the Student Rights and Responsibilities, and possible criminal charges. Please continue to talk with your children about the serious nature of these acts and the consequences they will face if they participate. I believe that by working together, we can make sure students and staff are learning and working together in a safe environment. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Scott Brabrand Superintendent” To OP: is this what you want your 12 year-old doing with her phone? F*** TikTok. No chance it’s ever allowed in my house / my kids phone. |
| I don't think the comparison with AOL chat groups is great. AOL was never about posting videos to the whole world to see. Chatting vs TikTok videos is different. |

Just no....we held the line. DD 15 has it and I hate it. I have a younger daughter who tried to get it and made her delete it. Has a friend her age who has had it since age 10--its so inappropriate.
|
| I’m a hard no, as well. I have a 11 & 13 yo. Neither have it. The younger one wishes she did, and the older one is glad she doesn’t. It’s a giant time waste, and is one more thing contributing to the continued undoing of our kids’ minds. That sounds cheesy but I truly believe it. 👎 |

Only a truly negligent, absent, terrible parent would allow their child to use TikTok.
If your kid has TikTok on your phone (and it IS YOUR PHONE), delete it entirely. |
| No. Judt say no. |

Had a discussion last night while driving for a few hours with my 20 year old son. His band is coming out with an album like many other bands and musicians. We were discussing how music is released and listened to currently by young folks and where they would try and get their music posted since no one listens to the radio anymore to hear music.
They have done a lot of research and spoken to a lot of advisors (advantage to being in college). Turns out TicTok is a fairly important place to release music. Spotify is the most important. YouTube is second, then Apple and TicTok are about equal. None pay well for music generating smaller numbers (less than a million listens), but you can then use those numbers to get bookings and set live show fees. So - TicTok will apparently be a bigger thing as more original music appears. |
| TikTok is virtual weed. |
But those wouldn't be the most important platforms if people stopped using them. I mean, it used to be Myspace for bands. |
|
TicTok is currently huge. It is easy to upload on it and it pays for content at about the same rates as Spotify and YouTube and Apple. It encourages short uploads (less than a minute) which is what you need for amateur folks and kids doing things like dances. A short YouTube. It may fade but not for another 5-10 years. It will be a question of whether the current 5-10 year olds continue on with the site or is there something new and better? Facebook, as an example, is long past done now for kids and young adults.

This is a team of professional cyber security experts who shared their experiences posing undercover as a teen girl
Here is the writeup: https://medium.com/@sloane_ryan/im-a-37-year-old-mom-i-spent-seven-days-online-as-an-11-year-old-girl-here-s-what-i-learned-9825e81c8e7d WARNING: Some of the conversations between predators and the woman posing as a teen will make you sick. |
| I just got my 12 yr DD a phone. I had blocked app download but she worked around by accessing TikTok on Safari. I've since blocked it. There's just so much that can go wrong, particularly now with the FCPS challenges. She cried and pleaded but she's only 12 yr. I make the calls at this point. We'll reassess in a few years. Stand your ground, OP |
OMG. Thanks for the trigger warning - you were right! These disgusting predators are revolting monsters! |
| Friends daughter got into cutting herself; friend believes she learned first about it on TikTok. |
It’s way more addictive than weed. Try heroine. |
