Anyone know about Laura Jane Cohen? (She is a candidate for Fairfax County School Board representing Springfield District.)
I see she was the PTA president at Cherry Run. Anyone know more about her? |
|
I don't.
I've been following Robert Walker for SB. Both will be running against Schultz? |
|
Laura Jane Cohen is great! Here is her website if you want to learn more about here.

| She's not Elizabeth Schultz. That right there is enough of a reason for me to vote for her. |
| Thanks for posting the link. So, her platform is more social workers and psychologists. What could go wrong? |
I’m wondering if the two running against her will split “Democrat” votes. |
Presumably the two Democrats are each seeking the FCDC endorsement for the Springfield District in the 2019 election, and the candidate who isn’t endorsed will step down or seek an at-large seat (although all three at-large seats are currently held by Democrats). |
| The election is in 2019 then? Nothing I have to concern myself with now. |
This website is one big nothingburger. What are her positions on issues? I'm going with Elizabeth Schultz. I'm a Democrat but some of the Democratic ideas being introduced will sink our schools. We need someone to balance things out, not another rubber stamp for some of these ideas. |
| If you support Schultz, you cannot describe yourself as a Democrat. I do understand why some Republicans these days don’t like to admit it. |
PPhere.I am absolutely a Democrat. I support teachers, unions and adequately funding our schools so that our children are successful. I don't support having our school sex Ed turn into a venue for pushing gender identity theories. I also don't like that our resources are sucked up by esl needs though there isn't really much that can be done about that- but if there were, I would trust Elizabeth Schultz to handle it better than Democrats. |

Elizabeth Schultz often states how she is an excellent School Board member because of her experience as a parent of a child with learning disabilities.
It appears Laura Jane Cohen has similar experience as a parent of a child with autism. Has she been involved with the Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD)? |
Interesting. I actually know Laura Jane Cohen and have a lot of respect for her. She definitely has my vote. However, she doesn’t have a child with autism. She has a lot of experience in the special education community for reasons I will let her share! I don’t think it’s my place to discuss her children and their abilities. I can say that she has been a resource and advocate for me when I have been dealing with special education issues at our school. I don’t have any personal experience with Elizabeth Schultz on this front. The only thing I will say about Schultz is that I have seen no evidence of her advocating for special education in FCPS or increased funding in the school board meetings I’ve followed. Laura Jane is also passionate about school safety but believes, as I do, that our best chance at safer schools centers on a more intervention based approach vice “arming” more school personnel or officers. I know she also believes in the rights of all of our students to feel safe from bullying for any reason (including their sexual orientation or gender identify etc). She has Q and As and other events coming up (listens on her FB page) that will make more of her positions clear. As I said, she’s a friend but I believe in her objectives and her passion. I look forward to new representation on our school board one day soon! |
Robert Walter's Facebook page and website: https://www.facebook.com/pg/Walter4FCPS/ http://www.walter4fcps.com/ Same for Laura Jane Cohen: https://www.facebook.com/lj4fcps/ https://www.laurajanecohen.com/ For each candidate, there seems to be more info on the Facebook page than the website. |
| Do any of these candidates actually care about education as in portrait of a graduate and the 3 R's? Go wherever you want to in the bathroom, but can we please get some people on the board who actually care about curriculum and teaching? |
