Some of the native Spanish speakers are white. |
I totally agree I am just wondering how many there are with our very compact land and many old building sites with school layout that are essentially the same as when built in the 1950’s. The school it’s self may be assessable but the on site playgrounds at nearly ever elementary school I’ve seen are mulch based. So is the blacktop area (when not being used to house trailers) assessable playground compliant? Also I believe special education transfers happen frequently. The % granted when asked for by parents I have no idea but at my ES I have seen a large number of students come from other schools. Why should a family have to transfer schools because APS doesn't comply with the ADA??? Kids sometimes need to transfer for certain programs or services that are only offered at a few locations - e.g. a communications program. No kid should have transfer from their neighborhood school to have access to a playground. It's 2020. |

Wow, just read the last comment from teacher to Jamestown parent on AEM. Who can say something to the School Board or super about this woman. Her comments are so unprofessional
Glad my kids are not in a school with her. |
It would be odd to me if APS is ok with a loose cannon teacher, putting herself out there as a school representative, tangling with and calling out parents the way that she is. |
She has a constitutional right to speak out on matters of public concern. But it sounds like the ways she’s choosing to speak aren’t helping her cause. |
| She may have a right, but a staff member at our school was called out for commenting on something on AEM. Her comment was benign and spoke to scheduling. We think they are afraid to shut her down since she will claim it’s due to race. |

The parents who support the moves proposal need to speak up and say so to the school board. (The mods locked one thread about this and deleted another, so the message bears repeating here.)
The opposition has launched a petition and a slick website packed with misleading info. They appear totally unconcerned with the thousands of students that would need to be reassigned, at least hundreds of them to far-flung schools with overstretched boundaries, in order to make their boundary-only scenarios come close to working. They also continue to downplay or outright ignore the benefits of giving the Rosslyn - Court House neighborhoods a truly local school, expanding ATS’ capacity, and moving the McKinley staff and most of its current students to a brand-new school. The loudest voices shouldn’t drown out others. Please take a few minutes to register your support with an email to APS Engage. Even better, share your support in person at the next school board meeting on January 30. |

Wow. Did a McKinley/Key parent ask Jeff to lock one thread and then delete another thread about supporting the proposal?
That was a really sh1tty thing to do. |
| I don’t know what prompted the locking of the thread, but I do hope the link to the website is deleted. That sends people to the bs website without any discourse on it. It inadvertently promotes the crazy people. I think it’s clear most of those responding here are not opposed to the move. |

I have been watching this whole debate from the sidelines. What I don’t get- ats isn’t close to Spanish speakers. Barcroft is. So is Carlin springs. Moving to ats site isn’t going to make any difference if the goal is to get more Spanish speakers to apply.
I understand why no one wants to upset Carlin springs, but why not barcroft? Huge Spanish speaking community blocks away. And little buy in from the neighborhood, most kids transfer out. Aps has toyed with taking Alcova out of that zone anyways, but there has been pushback because it would make the school too poor. So make it key, that would change everything for that school. |
At least one of her comments, the one questioning the “angle” of the Jamestown mom, was edited or deleted from AEM. I wonder who requested the removal. |
That thread was calling more attention to the website and petition. I suspect some of the posts on that thread and/or this one discussing the website may be concern trolls who are actually trying to get more it attention (and more signatures). |
| Then the website needs to be deleted |
Why report the thread about *supporting* the APS proposal? Sounds like McKinley/Key parents trying to silence others. |
Eh, she might have just thought better of it on reflection and deleted the comment herself. Let’s not get too tinfoil-hatty here. |
