This is not the first time multiple top, “favored” players have left Husel at u16/u19. Definitely should set off alarm bells / red flags. |
Look, people move clubs all the time so that is not itself evidence of a problem (but as this thread shows, there are problems at all the clubs). Husel has also been on the receiving end of "good" players from other clubs too. For the U19s leaving, I heard that it is one parent (who coaches at a a HS) who coordinated the Husel players at that HS to leave the club for one of the clubs stated above. Another player or two are going to other clubs. But again, that's all what I'm hearing. |
It all trickles down from the owner and coaches. Husel’s problems will never go away as long as the same person/people are in charge and continue to favor 10% of their players and use the other 90% to prop up the favored and overcharge them as well. I mean traveling to Florida during Thanksgiving when Shooting Stars in Midlothian VA is so close is absolutely idiotic and nobody who plays for Husel thinks it’s a good idea. Can’t tell me otherwise. Husel will continue to thrive, though, as long as they have a 10U team because that is almost an anomaly in Northern Virginia. |
Every single club has problems "at the top" as this entire thread shows. I agree with the rest of your post, for the most part. But in this case, it's a chunk of the "favored" 10% that are leaving U19. They all play for one HS (save one) and they are all moving with that coach's kids. |
Reading between the lines, maybe the HS coach is afraid what happened to the older girls will happen to her own kid. Maybe her motivation is selfish. Regardless, good on her for recognizing the problem and taking action. When we sit and do nothing, despite ongoing issues, we are part of the problem. Too many parents are willing to turn the other way. |
I can’t tell if your talking about Fairfax HS or Bishop O’Connell |
gotta believe its BOC. FX coach only has one kid on U19, who runs the show playing every position all at the same time... |
What’s happening at Bishop? I thought this thread was about Husel. |
Someone is suggesting the coach at Bishop O’Connell had something to do with players leaving Husel. |
Wish more people were on this Forum because I would love to get the inside scoop on the Husel situation. Metro and Hammers are in Loudoun, Freedom and Next Level are in Maryland. Husel seems like the only Northern Virginia club thats local to us and I don’t want to deal with crazy but it may be my only choice. |
All of these clubs are local. It is not uncommon to drive an hour for a club that gives you want you want. Field hockey is still small and not as represented as soccer or basketball, thus you drive. All clubs have their pluses and minuses, some more than others. There is a lot of information about clubs in this thread, you just need to read it. Also, the landscape changes so what was posted a year ago may no longer be accurate. The first question you need to ask yourself is what type of club you want. Then ask a question about which clubs meet this criteria located within your specific radius. Things you should consider: costs (practice fees, uniform fees, tournament fees), amount of overnight travel (hotels, gas, food), club culture (welcoming or not - parents and players), competitive (success in larger tournaments), recruiting support (if interested in playing in college what does the club do to help), coach experience (moms vs experienced players, vs experienced coaches), coaching style (yelling, belittling, calm, supportive), what does the coach value (winning, development, both), and whatever else I’m missing. If this is too much, just pick what is closest and then observe the club, listen for rumors, observe other clubs when you play them. |
This. Don’t assume what a single individual highlights are the defining characteristics of what makes a club good or bad (for example some may want to prioritize winning while others may be more interested in more equal playing time). There are other NOVA clubs like xtreme, Mustangs, and now Jackals but they may get less air time on this forum. |
The voice of reason. Thank you. |
NOVA xtreme would be in your area as well if your closest club is Husel. I think they are around the Annandale/Springfield area ?? (would fact check me there though). |
I think Nova Xtreme is trying to fly under the radar because they are owned/run by the Woodson High School Head Coach. Their U19 team has won a few tourneys over the past year or so, not so sure about the younger age groups. On this Forum they seem drama free….for now. |
