What about Mustangs? I just saw that they are having tryouts at McLean HS this weekend. |
Mustangs merged with Perfect Performance and they are like a whole new club. A group of girls left one of the other mentioned clubs for Mustangs this winter and the club is on the rise. Most of the coaches have D1 or international playing experience. It’s a very positive coaching style. |
Agreed. I've heard nothing but good things about the direction of this club. |
Buyer beware on Hussel, I’ve heard the director is unhinged, many stories of calls to parents, yells at them, hangs up on them and is vindictive to players who leave the club. They also focus on a few favorite players. Preferential treatment if you play for fairfax. Our friend’s daughter has gotten no support or help with recruiting. |
How can they be vindictive once the player has left? Also, any feedback from current parents on Freedom Hockey? Both the good and the bad? I’ve seen their star rise but curious how the merger with Spark has worked out, and how that may have affected playing opportunities. |
She's vindictive in her influence, such as with college recruiting, and keeping players off of all-state lists, etc. She has a couple of favorite players who get recognition far beyond what they deserve, which is also very frustrating. I don't know how that woman got so much influence. As for Freedom, my DD played for several years. They have been the strongest club in the area by far for quite some time and yes, now confirming their place as top 3 or 4 in the country. I think the merger with Spark means that now even the 2nd team will have a shot of being a positive experience for players. Until the merger, as long as you rostered on the top team, Freedom was fantastic. For everyone else, it was just okay. With that said, I don't think all the coaching is great. Sarah D. is obviously an amazing coach and the younger former MD player is definitely up and coming. Beyond them, it looks a little hit or miss. I don't have a player there anymore, but do hear from parents who are still there. My DD had a great experience, but was also a bit relieved when the pressures of club field hockey were behind her (now a college player). |

Thank you to PP. very helpful |
This is the most amazing and helpful thread thank you PPs!
DD 10 is a pretty new player (one season of rec + a few clinics) and she’d like to play more. One travel team has expressed interest (the coach also coaches a rec team and saw DD play), but it sounds like that might not be a great team to join (ahem). Do I just look for tryout announcements for other teams or is there a better way to go about finding a team? |
I think all the area teams have been listed in this thread. They all have websites so I’d start there for contact info. Some have already had tryouts for spring, but others haven’t. I believe next level is holding theirs this weekend. Regardless, at that age, most clubs will probably take your daughter even if she misses the official tryout. She can use a practice as a tryouts. But go to several you see interested in. At her age you might not pick the right club if she sticks with it long term. That’s OK, aim to find your forever club as a u14. That gives you plenty of time to know what your want and where you can find it. |
Heard not so great things about the coach from several families. But they do have strong teams. They were our toughest competitor at the recent National Indoor Tournament |
<< How can they be vindictive once the player has left? >>
Rumor or smoke=fire? I’ve heard stories someone there has called a college coach to try to get scholarships pulled — telling the college coach the player has not been reliable (because she left?) |
OMG! this sounds like pure evil |
This is truth |
They usually have ONE strong team per age group and the others are good enough for the DC area. Their one coach is a crazy person on the sidelines, ime. Screaming and carrying on. |
