Daughter wants to try out for Poms

Anonymous
Hello, so my daughter wants to try out for the Northwoods Poms at the end of the month, but knowing my daughter, if the team isn't good she will talk about quitting in mid-season, and I just don't want to put up with that in the future, it'd be totally unfair to her team. She said NHS has the best poms program out of the 5 DCC school. Can anyone verify that?

Why do you assume she’d make the team?

Or that the team wouldn't be good enough for her?

Northwood placed 2nd in Division 2 in this past year's competition. The teams are placed in Divisions based on how good they are from the previous two seasons. So they are quite good. I believe the other DCC teams are Division 3. I am sure that Northwood will have some talented dancers on their team and no one will be too good. There are lots of opportunities for "solos" and captain moves.

Is there a link for results?

That's false. Northwood place 2nd two consecutive years in division 3, unable to beat Whitman. They actually got 2nd at the Damascus Invitational this year, which isn't the last competition, rather a competition for feed back. At the MCPS counties, Northwood placed 8th this year in division 2. Einstein got 1st and Whitman got 2nd. Einstein scored 648 to Whitman's 616. Einstein has the best poms program in the DCC. Einstein got 1st place two years in a row in division 3, got 4th in their 1st year in division 2. Got 2nd in 2016, Einstein are now the MCPS Poms division 2 champions.

If North wood scores low next year, they most likely be back in D3, while Einstein move to D1.

The Poms at my DCs school were smart girls and many went on to very competitive colleges.

Dear Poms expert,

I didn't realize there were divisions, so I thought Wheaton was 1st place for poms. What division is Wheaton in?

most of the poms kids also do the competitive hip hop national competitions. it's a lot of fun. totally different than cheerleading, BTW.

Northwood Poms are crazy low on the totem pole, so I get your misgivings. Maybe she could do a sport that she'd have a chance at getting a scholarship in? Track? Or maybe focus on academics?

Where? Radford? Trump University?

Look, I'm as biased against cheerleading as the next person, but I'm impressed by the dance skills of Poms! PS- I know a Poms grad who is a math major at a very nice college.
