Daughter wants to try out for Poms

Anonymous
My cousin's daughter was a Pom about 5years ago and went on to become a professional dancer. She does a lot of videos and I love watching her on YouTube. She travels all over the world back-up dancing with bands -- rap and hip-hop, which i hate, but i love seeing her do what she loves and making really good money at it. College (orthodontia, she says, is her future) can wait, dancing can't!

So who's better Northwood or Einstein?

Okay I watched a YouTube but I still don’t understand what makes it not cheerleading and why if it is just dance team they wear cheerleading uniforms.

As an immigrant I had no idea what Poms were when my DD started HS. However, once I saw her school's Poms dances, they were really talented and it required a ton of skill. DD is not in it, but honestly I am amazed at how good they are. This is dancing, and very difficult dancing. She is in Sherwood High, so I think they lost to QO this year, but won it last school year. Making a team at Sherwood is very difficult, my DD wasn't interested the whole explanation came about after me asking why are there girls waving Poms.... today!

Sherwood got 2nd in D1, QO got 5th.

Yes, you are right, Poolesville won this year, I messed it up in my head. I watched their video as of course Sherwood kids thought they should have won, but the winner had by far a better and more artistic and modern dance routine. If I didn't see it for myself(on youtube), I never would have known and believed what a difficult athletic and dance skill is being in Poms today.

I agree, Sherwood team moves like robots but teams like Poolesville and Einstein are so creative when it comes to routines. Yes! Einstein was the first MCPS poms team ever to have a boy on their team. My daughter friend says everyone at the school was SUPER supporting. What a wonderful student body.

Do you have the link with the performance of the boy?

She said NHS has the best poms program out of the 5 DCC school. Can anyone verify that?

Your daughter should commit to the year if she makes the team. It's wrong to allow her to do otherwise barring injury or poor grades.

This is the Northwood Poms coach, one of my parents sent me this link and while I appreciate the purpose of this forum it is important to note that these are non professional student athletes. I would love to address any areas of concern that your daughter may have about our program.

Northwood is the youngest MCPS Poms team and has been extremely successful but like any program our strength comes from parental support and team member commitment.

We offer a competitive program and have received over 30 awards in the decade we have existed. Einstein is an extremely talented team as are all the Mcps poms in the DCC. Poms is a 2 season sport so she may choose to do Fall only to see if she enjoys the program.

For any further questions or concerns please contact me through my email which can be found on Norrhwood’s Athletic Page.

Hello Coach, is there a parent interest meeting coming up any time soon?

Northwood has a very wonderful strong hard working team. I will say there not the Best in the game. But there not the under dogs. They have a wonderful coach and students /dancers. Northwood Pom’s really work for what they want . Your child would be coming home happy to be apart of this team. They came out very strong the pass 3 years . So sit back and watch it unfold ! Remember there’s different levels also for a team that doesn’t have a full gym space to practice or for a team where dancers dance in and out side of school lets no forget a team who follows rules from MCPS don’t practice on snow days. Yeah 2nd place never looked so good

Parent of a RM pom alumni and a current pom. I did enjoy watching Northwood poms team, a group of very talented girls. However, my daughter did inform me of a incident where the Northwood Poms fans and some Northwood Poms themselves accused the judges of racial bias behind the competing results online , which is untrue and a huge slap in the face to the other hard working teams. This was Northwood's 1st or 2nd year in D2 and while I admire their confidence, lets not be too cocky. I hope that the coach spends this current season teaching her athletes some humility and focus more on the journey and not the destination. I wish your daughter and Northwood Poms the best!

I’m not seeing the connection between accusing the judges of racial bias and needing to learn humility.

It was from my understanding that they accused the judges of racial bias because the team scored low due to the fact that they were a more diverse squad. My daughter also inform me that the Northwood student body also thought they were gonna place due to their previous success much like Whitman. Whitman was in division 2 when my oldest daughter was in Poms 4 years ago, so they knew what the division was like. Northwood should've prepared to the idea that they might not place in a more difficult division this year. Also, to call the judges racist just protays the student body as sore losers especially when BCC a very diverse team place 3rd, and Einstein (Northwoods DCC sister school and just as diverse) placied first.
