How often do you visit your kids once they go away to college?

DD will be about 6-8 hrs away depending on traffic. Right now, my wheels are spinning about how often we can see each other. What's a typical frequency once your kid flies the nest?

Thanksgiving, Christmas, sometime in the spring and then home for the summer.

Parents rarely visit.

No more than once a semester. With that distance, and if you have to go collect them at breaks etc, you probably won't want to add another visit.

Usually kids return home fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks. That's 4x a year.

You may or may not count spring because you kid might decide to travel instead of returning home.

You might have to add Thanksgiving, depending on your school. At my D's school, school turns empty on Thanksgiving, even though it's a very short weekend. Something to be aware of if going away for the first time. Thanskgiving alone for an 18 yr old could be rough.

DC is at UMD. We go see him every 2-3 weeks. Take him out to lunch and stuff.

Like others have said, you see them on breaks. Otherwise, we're not planning to visit. He's going to be busy with studying and activities I'm sure. I'm excited for him!

She comes home:

Fall break (only first year she came home)
Thanksgiving
Winter break
Spring break (she went away this year so only home for 2 days))
Summer (she interns in DC)

I go visit her:
1.Family weekend (usually between Fall break and Thanksgiving)
2. Early to mid Feb to go to a basketball game, sightseeing, and taker her and few friends out to a decent dinner or brunch.
3. End of school year to pack her up and bring her home

So we see her almost once a month except Sept and April.

From your title it sounds like you want to visit her. I don't think it's common that parents visit their kids in college. Maybe once a year? It's more the kids coming back on breaks.

My DD is 1500 miles away (3.5 hour flight). She has been home for Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks and was home last summer (after freshman year). She is only spending a week or so at home this summer. We haven't been out to visit.

The one and only time my parents saw my college (GWU) was at graduation.

We visit her Parents’ Day (if DC asks, so far she has. Tends to fall near her birthday), Thanksgiving (every other year; have extended family in the same city as college), maybe once over summer, depending on where she is.

She comes home at Christmas (always) and Spring Break (first 2 years — not sure thereafter), end of summer.

Hardly ever. We drove out there one summer. Generally she flies home for Christmas and a week or two during the summer. Thanksgiving was too much of a hassle so we stopped that after freshman year. She does her own thing for fall (long weekend) and spring breaks. She stays there for most of the summer. They have an.odd schedule so have a short mid-semester break in late February. This year she flew out to meet her dad in LA while he was there for work.

How do you deal with going from seeing your child every single day to a handful of times a year? This is gonna hurt.

Texting and Skype will help.

It does hurt for a while but you will get used to it, and may even begin to enjoy the freedom. If you aren't flat broke from tuition i'd plan a trip or two to a place you've wanted to visit, take a class and learn something new.
