10 year olds entering 3rd? Come on now.

In general, I agree with cutoffs being cutoffs, not polite suggestions. And I think redshirting to an extreme is lazy parenting.

Fortunately, I live in an area where this is not an issue but I agree that schools where this is happening should address it. If we aren’t putting kids in grades based on age, what’s the new plan?

OP is in a private school. The kids who are “ten” are there because that is where the people she pays tuition to want them to be.

And “we” are putting kids in grades based on ages. Most area school systems have some scope for parental discretion, which seems to be what’s setting off the anti-redshirt crowd.

My kid is at a big football HS and there is at least one kid who will graduate at 20. My kid will be 17.

Do you get the trophy or does your kid for graduating at 17?

yah 20.. no need for that. a redshirted kid should be 18 and turn 19 in the senior year.

No, either they were held back two years or a summer or fall kid held back once or twice due to cut off.

Sounds like it was for football. It’s kind of shameless. they couldn’t be the star or get recruited being within the normal age range so they manipulated the system to play

Will people stop bringing up 4 year olds? that’s reasonable to hold.. summer is reasonable.. spring is reasonable.. but beyond that? I am sorry, it’s ridiculous

These kids are 4 for a few weeks, not all year. It’s just an excuse bbsummer is not reasonable.

People won’t stop bringing them up, because as long as four is “on time” then there has to be parental discretion to redshirt. If you want to stop people bringing up four year olds, focus your effort on moving the cutoffs, but otherwise it’s hypocritical to say “redshirting is bad except when the parents decide it’s in the obvious developmental interest of the child (except when other parents decide it’s in the developmental interest of the child)”

What evidence do you have that he was redshirted in K vs was a transfer or failed a couple grades?

Adults are always on football teams because even non redshirted kids will turn 18 senior year.

It was unacceptable for me to send my four year old for even a few weeks and I don’t really care if you thought that was an excuse.

News flash: kids who play football may fail grades just like any other student. And most club sports these days go by birth year and that’s where recruitment happens not the high schools. You don’t sound like you know much about collegiate recruitment for sports.

You’re a good parent.

You’re an idiot. Football is not a club sport.

I love that now the people pathetically arguing about redshirting have also decided they are experts on high school football. As if they would ever let their kids play football or have ever seen a game themselves.

You think you need to be an expert in high school football to know 18 is an adult in the United States?

also doesn’t take a genius to realize football is a school sport
