VA Publics worth out of state tuition

Anonymous
Other than UVA and W&M are any of the other VA publics worth paying out of state tuition?
If you lived in MD and don't get in at UMd would you consider paying full OOS tuition at VT, JMU, GMU or others?

We would have paid OOS tot VT, only because it was DS's second choice and DH's alma mater. Fortunately though, we didn't have to!

There are tons of OOS kids at all of the VA public schools. So I guess plenty of people are happy to pay OOS tuition to go there!

No
In fact would not consider it for UVA. Would consider W and M well worth the price of admission except for the location

DS rooms with an international and two other OOS kids at GMU.

No.

Both kids opted OOS over UVA.

I find UMD and College Park to be totally banal, so I’d pay out of state tuition for VT and JMU even if DC was admitted to Maryland.

Lots of New Yorkers go to WM.

VT engineering - heck yes. It's one of the top engineering schools in the country.

+1. VT is top 10 in several areas of engineering, and top 15 overall. There are also some specialty programs there. A top 10-15 architecture school. Some specialized agriculture programs. Not for a humanities degree, no.

VCU has some unusually strong departments in the Health Sciencs School, and a 6 year/ direct admit med school program. These might be worth it.

The question is what is your in state option, and can you get into a VA state school with a significantly better choice?

And so is UMD Clark School of Engineering. They have NASA Goddard right down the street. A huge brand new Kim building which is state of the art and top notch. They are the only university that has a neutral buoyancy tank/facility in the country to mimic weightless conditions in space. Not to mention Clark just donated another $219 million in October to expand the engineering school and research even more. Internships are close by in DC as well.

Also, if you decide to not pursue engineering or other science degrees, UMD has so many other offerings.

Not a New Yorker when he went, he is a Jersey boy.

We went the other direction. DC is at Purdue, which he chose over VT.
