VA Publics worth out of state tuition

I paid OOS tuition for W&M for my son.

There is little doubt that UMCP is better than VT for engineering. CP also costs $7k more OOS than VT.

Does that makes it easier to get into VT for engineering from OOS?

VT is better than UDel. Penn St is losing state funding fast and costs $10k more OOS.

At $43k OOS, VT engineering is a good deal.

JMU is about 23% OOS and I think most are paying the full tuition rate as JMU does not offer much merit aid.
VT is also 23% OOS. GMU is only 10% and VCU is 7%.
UVA is 27% and W&M - 30%.

In contrast, the MD state schools and OOS students:
UMD - 21%; UMBC - 5%; Towson - 13%, Salisbury - 13% and Frostburg - 6%.

Lots of New Yorkers go to WM.

Plenty of OOS students at JMU, VT, GMU, etc.

What is the draw that people would want to pay the premium.
For example someone could attend Towson in-state for $26k/yr. JMU will cost $37k/yr for OOS. Is it really worth the additional $11k?

Heck yeah! Towson sounds like a hick town community school. James Madison, well you should know who that is and what it represents.

And so is UMD Clark School of Engineering. They have NASA Goddard right down the street. A huge brand new Kim building which is state of the art and top notch. They are the only university that has a neutral buoyancy tank/facility in the country to mimic weightless conditions in space. Not to mention Clark just donated another $219 million in October to expand the engineering school and research even more. Internships are close by in DC as well.

Also, if you decide to not pursue engineering or other science degrees, UMD has so many other offerings.

Can you provide a link? Not sure where you are getting your info. but according to USNR rakings, VT is ranked #14 (tied with JHU, Madison & Texas A&M) and UMD #25 (tied with U. Penn).

Jon Stewart of Daily Show went there.

Not a New Yorker when he went, he is a Jersey boy.

I remember meeting him there when he was a brand-new freshman. He had a different name, though.

Not worth it for JMU, but your kids will enjoy their time there

It would depend on what major my kid wanted and the school's reputation for that major.

I wouldn't pay OOS VT admission for my kid to get a business or English degree from there. But one of the STEM degrees? Sure.

GMU has 20% OOS and international.

William and Mary applications fell this year and their admission rate (36 percent) is unimpressive. What’s going on with that school?

Yes for UVA, W&M, VAtech, butvI would never allow my DCs to apply in any event
As a DC resident, everything is OOS

Plus, to follow up, I just noticed that their yield has been very poor over the past several years. So no to William and Mary OOS. UVA would be the only one to consider from my perspective.
