People who went to crummy colleges go overboard with grad/prof college bragging?

Anyone else notice this? I thought your alma mater, the place you made the most memories, had the most fun, deepest connection to is undergrad? Gal in my spin class is always wearing cute Georgetown shirts and has a Georgetown sticker on her Jeep. Come to find out she went to Florida State, only did a one year grad program at GU. My husband's bff from college got an MBA from Duke's business school and his theater/sports TV room is decked out in Duke Blue Devils everything - no sign of anything from his undergrad. Seems desperate. Are they embarrassed about where they went to college?

I think you're projecting your own insecurity.

How old are you? And who cares?

Errrrr.... they're supporting a school they like.

Plus the "made the most memories, had the most fun" lens is a strange one through which to view education. I spent four years in undergrad and had fun and made memories, but they're not inherently deeper or more meaningful than the three years' worth of memories I made in law school.

This. Also, I went to my undergrad because my parents basically coerced me into it, and I was a naive 17yo. I chose my law school.

Actually, I’ve found that those who went to elite schools are more often likely to go overboard in this way.

I wear more grad school gear than undergrad because my grad school t-shirts are in better shape. Some people also left undergrad with dire job prospects but hit their career groove after grad school. Hope this helps clear up this major issue for you!

I got an MBA and it really shaped me. I'm more likely to wear a shirt from there than my undergrad, even though both were top schools. You're over-thinking.

Is Florida State crummy?

Is the grad school seen as having more prestige than your undergrad? And you feel good projecting that higher status?

Crummy than and lower prestige compared to Georgetown, yes.

Maybe take a chill pill OP. I went to Crappy State U and Crappy Law School. I don't wear either's stuff because I hate t-shirts. Maybe live and let live a little. If the people went to those places for grad school and those grad schools admitted them...then they can wear the stuff. And if someone wants to wear a Harvard shirt and didn't go to Harvard...what are you going to do ...sue them?

My kid went to HYP and I have a hat from her rowing team for all the time/memories we had watching the regattas. Do you want to sue me?

Just being observant. The mental gymnastics people perform to rationalize why they're obsessed with projecting [higher] status is fascinating, to me.

Who cares? And I can understand decking out your sports room in Blue Devils stuff and wearing it at this time of year with March Madness.
