There is no Republican Party it’s party of Putin liars and criminals anti American |
And what does that have to do with some democrats saying the Dems should vote to open the government? |
Nothing. No matter what that op says, I did write my senators for them to vote to open and I AM a Maryland Dem. It is time to reopen. |
but Dems need a way to turn this into a 'win' for themselves. i just don't see how. |
| I’m a fed who thinks that Dems need to hold firm until Repubs include provisions assuring what they agree to will be made to happen (no impoundments, etc), backpay for all Feds (and preferably contractors), and a temporary extension of the ACA subsidies long enough for the Repubs’ purportedly “secret” healthcare plan to be voted on. Repubs can re-open the government by nuking the filibuster or otherwise compromising with Dems. And the House should be back in DC immediately to work on actual funding bills or another CR given the pending bill expires 11/21. |
Impoundment and use of the apportionment authority will be decided by the courts, not Congress. You can’t address major constitutional and policy questions in a CR. |
Senate staff aren’t being paid, but surely constituent services are an excepted function? I mean, I’m being required to report to work every day without pay, so they should as well. We are in the midst of a constitutional restructuring. The remedy for the executive’s usurpation of spending authority is for Congress to assert its authority and appropriate, preferably by passing actual spending bills, not for Congress to sit on the sidelines because it’s been taken offline by a shutdown. The Dems are playing into OMB’s hands. |
And how, pretell, is folding and getting no concessions from the Republicans not playing into OMB’s hands? In a regular negotiation, if you want something from a party (votes), you typically negotiate. The Republicans have chosen to wait the Democrats out. It makes no sense to concede. They can let the Republicans eliminate the filibuster. |
Me too. I called both senators and told them my opinion. I ask what is their exit strategy. Their staffs have no acceptable answers. I am dumbfounded. The democrats lost this battle and federal employees and the American people are the ones that are suffering. It is disgraceful that federal employees are in food pantry lines and do not have funds to pay their bills. It has been over a month, they need to reopen this week. |
| Does anyone know when the next vote is? I assume both parties are going to wait to see how they fare in tomorrow’s elections before any headway is made. |
It’s not today. They convene at 3 and are not s heckled to vote on anything of substance. So we are shut on Tuesday at the least, making this the longest shutdown ever! So much winning!!!! /s |
The Senate has a vote today on the same CR, I think. |
Is this true though? The American people clearly don’t give two craps about federal employees but are somewhat concerned about the government shutdown. The Republicans control the government and this looks pretty bad for them. Overall, despite the lack of organization this is a win for the democrats. It’s at federal employee expense that’s all. |
DP but are people concerned about the shutdown? I only had one friend out of DC area who asked me how I was doing with the shutdown. I am not sure others even know what is going on. |
The GOP eliminating the filibuster would be a fantastic win for Democrats. When is the next time you think Democrats will have 60 votes in the Senate? With the outsized influence of rural, conservative states in the Senate, it isn't happening any time soon. The only way Democrats will get anything done is to eliminate the filibuster. And having the GOP do it would shield the democrats form the political backlash. The Senate is an anti-democratic (small d) institution in the best of circumstances, and the modern filibuster makes it much more so. It would be great if it were gone. |
