I’m counting calories to lose weight and I’m starving/hangry

Anonymous
I have 50 pounds to lose and I know counting calories is the only way to do it.

It’s been a week and I am starving. I did this before over the summer and was so hungry I had to quit. It made me short tempered and angry, especially with my little kids.

Is this hunger my new normal? I was obviously eating too much since I was overweight.

Does my body just need to get used to eating like this? How long until I’m not so hungry?

Have you tried Weight Watchers? Finding foods that are filling but lower calorie might help you. It's been a few years since I did it, but I found the increase in vegetables and other fiber-rich foods helpful.

Are you on too low calorie diet for you? Try increasing a bit of calories.

Also see the foods you eat, some foods make you hungrier than others. Do you have enough protein / salads in your diet? Enough fat? They help with satiety.

Also, are you sure yoy’re not overestimating calories?

I also counted calories to lose weight but don’t remember starving, but then my goal was to lose 1/2 or 1/4 lb per week. It took a looooong time, but I didn’t feel like I was starving.

It may also be adjustment period and you’ll feel less hungry soon.

I’m already spending my “wellness” money on an exercise class and fitness challenge, both that I love and am excited about.

LOL @ "hangry"

must be "angry + hungry = hangry"

I agree with weight watchers. Do not cut calories drastically. Make gradual reductions and increase your physical activity; otherwise your metabolism slows and you won’t loose weight.

How low of a deficit?

Unfortunately hunger is part of dieting, but it should be something you can maintain.

19:37 here. I used an app to track calories and activity, so it used to automatically add calories for exercise and steps. Are taking those into account when you exercise?

What kind of meals are you eating? Are you eating enough protein? I am also counting calories, and most of the time I am not super hungry, as long as I eat the correct balance of protein/carbs/fat. I've had to really up the amount of carbs I eat and reduce carbs to get the maximum about of filling foods for my calories. You can see your breakdown on my fitness pal (even the free one).

No dairy, no wheat. Coming off Whole30 and trying to stick with it, and lower calories.

I must have been eating a billion calories before if I am so hungry now.
