They are so full of shit. -Crossfield parent who would rather go to the closer school.

Regardless of language on websites, let's be honest with ourselves: Proximity does not ALWAYS equal quality.

As a parent of an 8th grader at Carson, let me give you a preview of what Skyview will be like. It's going to look similar to the direction that Carson has been moving in for the past year. You'll have about a third of the kids there who are really committed to their studies and want to excel academically and participate in extracurriculars. Wonderful! The remaining student body will be bringing knives to school and reselling things they stole from Walmart. (No, these are not hypothetical happenings: These are two very real occurrences that happen at least once a month now at Carson. And this kind of activity has only gotten worse in the past 2 years.)

So ... sure. If that's the environment you want your child in for HS, go for it. Yes, ALL schools have unique challenges and none are immune from problems. And I have no doubt that Skyview will hire great staff. But be careful what you wish for when your top priority is attending the "closer school."

You do realize that all of Crossfield except a small part, already goes to Carson now right? If Crossfield is fine with Carson, which they are, and Skyview will be the same as Carson as you claim, they should be fine with Skyview.

Oh wait…something something rooted in a zip code 10 miles away something something.

The irony of the rooted in Oakton people is their lobbying to be sent to a “poorer” performing middle school (Franklin) which, let’s be honest, is masked by the fact that their AAP kids will stay at Carson anyway.

In summary, they got their entire school moved to a lower performing middle school, knowing their own kids would stay at the higher performing middle school, all to justify their weird obsession with a high school an hour from their house by bus.

I hope the school board sees right through that.

No, the AAP kids will not stay at Carson, actually. Kyle McDaniel specifically said at a recent meeting that Franklin will be an AAP center within the next two years. So AAP kids technically zoned to Franklin will no longer be opting in to Carson - they will remain at Franklin.

FCPS has long said that they are phasing out AAP opt-ins at the middle school level and they are in the process of making that change now.

Appreciate your comment but your "facts" are completely inaccurate.

The school board has been saying for years they’re doing that and it has yet to actually happen like the middle school start times. RIO crowd engineered a bait and switch, and everyone sees through it.

Ah, I see you're the Crossfield mom who has been peddling these stories around the neighborhood. I have a middle schooler in general ed classes (no, not even honors, just general ed) who has not seen any of this. Yes, there have been a few fights this year, no, my child hasn't been exposed to them. Our friends who have kids at Franklin have also told us about fights and hate "crimes" over the past several years. What you are talking about happens everywhere, even at your precious Oakton.

I have a third grader, a THIRD GRADER, who is already telling me that all of his friends in AAP will still go to Carson even though we're being rezoned to Franklin.

I always love these posts. I have a kid in 8th grade at Carson, he has not heard of kids bringing knives to school or kids reselling stolen Walmart merchandise. He has not talked to me about fights but his friends mention to girl fights that they see.

Far more then 1/3 of the school is taking AAP and Honors classes. Far more then a 1/3 of the school are following the rules. The number of disciplinary issues involving weapons is really small and probably on par with most of the non-Title 1 MS. And I would guess that you have these issues at Oakton as well, I am reasonably certain that the last OD email involved a student from Oakton so it isn't all sun shine and perfect children.

Skyview will be a strong school with plenty of kids who are interested in learning, some great clubs, and all the things that parents want for their kids. There will be disciplinary issues because teens are teens and do stupid things. That happens at Oakton as well as Langley as well as McNair and every other HS in the County. The families we know at Herndon and Lewis, and we know many families at both schools, don't worry about their kids safety. They like the schools their kids are at. No one I know at SLHS has been worried about their kids safety or has had any real issue with the school or the community. Maybe you need to leave your bubble and realize that many of your fears are in your head and not reality. Or you can look at the rare case and overreact.

There is one particular parent in our neighborhood who has been going on and on about gangs at Carson, blah blah blah. I suspect this is her. None of us have children who have experienced this - at any level of classes.

DP but your facts are inaccurate. The slides shown at school board meetings don't have this occurring at Franklin until 2030. That's more than 2 years away and we all know that FCPS has a tendency to delay these things for years. No decisions have been made.

Franklin has plenty of AAP kids at Carson and could easily have supported its own program.

Back in the day, when there was GT--and not AAP--the Honors classes at Franklin were quite good. I can't speak for now, but kids got a terrific education there.

They need to get rid of AAP. Start tracking at fourth grade, if needed. But, have it flexible. Too many kids in AAP do not belong there.

Your timeline is off. Franklin is the last school on the list to get AAP, currently scheduled for 2029-2030 school year. The other schools were phased in sooner. This of course assumes it actually happens. People fight every single change, so I'm sure there will be people pushing back on that too.

Anonymous wrote:There are inherent issues presented by the makeup and location of Crossfield. Basically three areas: the parts located west and south of West Ox that have higher population density and more of a community feel (and are also located closer to Chantilly and/or Skyview) and the parts on the other wide that are houses on large lots where they have to drive everywhere anyway so Oakton feels more reasonable. And the third part that is adjacent to Reston and goes to South Lakes.
A three way split does seem pretty insane, so why not simplify it by making it 2 way with the western part going to Carson/Skyview and the rest going to Hughes/SLHS?

With everything that has happened so far I think this is the most likely scenario for the next (2030) boundary review.

You gotta touch grass, karen. Devoting your time to actually trying to improve the school would pay more dividends, than just pearl clutching on DCUM.

Being slightly mean is one thing. Being totally full of crap is another.

No one in their right mind thinks that 2/3 of the kids at Carson are even misbehaving, much less coming to school with weapons or stolen goods. But that's how you freaks from Oakton and Langley routinely talk about kids that don't fit your preferred demographics.

You need a change of scenery, courtesy of the School Board.

For example, I’m in the small section of Oak Hill that just got cut off from the rest. We live in Franklin Farm and in Scenario 2, we no longer go to middle school or high school with anyone else from Oak Hill. They froze us because of our distance to Franklin and redistricted the rest of Oak Hill to Carson and Skyview. What legs do we have to stand on to try to get moved with the rest of our friends if we’re in the frozen area? None of us mind Franklin or Chantilly; we just want to remain together. How do we best advocate for that?

There's a Franklin Farm community guide circulating on this issue, with background, maps, and suggested comment language for the boundary tool, before the June 9 deadline. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M0YRFvcrqJGlvu0g4dS2GzWpeUhQYqNNBmJxHEemib8

Ah yes, from your rhetoric, we can see that you love your neighbor. No anger issues at all.

You get more flies with sugar than with vinegar, especially when your vinegar would diminish FCPS as a whole. You should just admit that a pure equity play is out of touch with most Fairfax constituents.

Why don’t you just ask those Oakton “freaks” to nicely move away from their own community so that you can selfishly benefit?
