Right. If they had just made Scenario 1 where all of Crossfield goes to Carson-Skyview, the reaction would be very different. It's almost like someone has a contact in Gatehouse and suggested this as a way to get a united pro-Oakton front!! Hm....

Maybe.

Honestly I think there are more pro–Oakton Crossfield families than pro–Carson/Skyview families, but it doesn't matter. The RIO won.

They were very transparent about moving to Franklin. They created the website and started the petition at the very early stage. Pro–Oakton parents were well represented at every meeting I attended, outnumbering pro–Skyview parents by at least 4 to 1.

All the pro–Skyview parents did was complain on this board.

Well that's probably not entirely true. I guess they contacted the school board and left comments too.

But from day one they lost the PR battle and never recovered.

Not in RIO, but I remember people pooh poohing the fact that parents can be organized when lobbying FCPS.

Parents should absoutely do that to advocate for their kids.

What does that even mean? Whoever doubted that parents and community members can be organized?

That doesn’t mean the School Board shouldn’t be making decisions that are in the best interests of all students, and not just the students whose parents have organized an advocacy group.

This! A great example of those who could use some advocacy are those Chantilly students who live in a high FARMS area along route 50. 1.5 miles from Chantilly High School--yet, they are slated to be moved to Westfield--4 miles away and lots more time.
I've worked in schools with very poor students. Truancy can be a problem if a bus is missed. After school activities? problematic because of transportation.
This is an egregious decision.

There’s a separate follow-up boundary study that involves a number of elementary schools in Falls Church, including high-FARMS Graham Road ES.

It’s a little messy because there’s one group of higher-income families who’d previously supported a proposal where they essentially all would have moved to Graham Road, while the low-income families now at Graham Road would have ended up an attendance island bused a longer distance to a different school. That proposal wasn’t adopted because it was so callous on its face, but they are still trying to figure out what to do.

In any event, Reid appointed a staff person to be the point person for that study, and he made a point of telling people that he was going to reach out and make sure he understood what the current Graham Road families prefer, not just assume they’d show up at public meetings or respond to surveys.

Sounds like they need to do something similar with that community along Route 50 now at Chantilly - but will they make the effort?

I wish they had done this at Crossfield. There are a lot of families, particularly those with younger children and immigrant families, who are not linked into the RIO mom community, that haven't been heard.

Exactly this!!!

Yup. Advocate for your kids to be on long commutes on a bus --or driving on dangerous roads.
Real advocacy.

Dude, those kids are on a bus thats shorter than my commute.

Don't raise your kids to be wimps, or decide to send your kids to a school with a higher FARMs rate than what you're assigned too now.
And I'm a snob whoopty do, I feel superior to you and don't care if you don't like me.

I’m an Oakton parent whose kid will have a long commute. You sound like an idiot. Your teenager does not have an adult brain. I bet you’re one of the morons who lets their middle school are have an electric scooter or bike just because it’s cool. More money than sense in your household. It doesn’t really matter where your kid goes to high school if they’ve inherited your similar low intelligence.

It's actually kind of silly because your average child will absolutely not stand out at Oakton, and they might have a chance at Skyview.

There are inherent issues presented by the makeup and location of Crossfield. Basically three areas: the parts located west and south of West Ox that have higher population density and more of a community feel (and are also located closer to Chantilly and/or Skyview) and the parts on the other wide that are houses on large lots where they have to drive everywhere anyway so Oakton feels more reasonable. And the third part that is adjacent to Reston and goes to South Lakes.
A three way split does seem pretty insane, so why not simplify it by making it 2 way with the western part going to Carson/Skyview and the rest going to Hughes/SLHS?

So why again are they still going to high school in Oakton, the 5th closest high school to them?

Quoted from their website, which describes why 🤦🏻‍♀️

“Our kids are not just numbers.
They are future graduates, athletes, artists, and leaders whose success depends on stability and support.
They are part of a living, growing community — one that deserves consistency, care, and a voice in decisions that shape their future.”

They are so full of shit. -Crossfield parent who would rather go to the closer school.

Regardless of language on websites, let's be honest with ourselves: Proximity does not ALWAYS equal quality.

As a parent of an 8th grader at Carson, let me give you a preview of what Skyview will be like. It's going to look similar to the direction that Carson has been moving in for the past year. You'll have about a third of the kids there who are really committed to their studies and want to excel academically and participate in extracurriculars. Wonderful! The remaining student body will be bringing knives to school and reselling things they stole from Walmart. (No, these are not hypothetical happenings: These are two very real occurrences that happen at least once a month now at Carson. And this kind of activity has only gotten worse in the past 2 years.)

So ... sure. If that's the environment you want your child in for HS, go for it. Yes, ALL schools have unique challenges and none are immune from problems. And I have no doubt that Skyview will hire great staff. But be careful what you wish for when your top priority is attending the "closer school."

+1 sorry but some of these Oakton parents are delusional if they believe their child is so much better off at Oakton vs Skyview or SLHS. They honestly don’t know what they are missing.

2 things happening will improve the Carson problem.

1. Enforcement of our country’s immigration laws, already underway and impacting FCPS student demographics.
2. Leadership (Superintendent, principals, etc) growing a spine and doling out real consequences for misbehavior. At some point it needs to hit the parents too with real consequences. But it really needs to start in the early years. Parent well in years 4-11 and you barely need to lift a finger in years 12-18.

I hope you're right but I haven't seen much progress on either of these fronts. This sounds amazing in theory. I just wish it were closer to being reality.

No one wants to move to IB. No one. OK, so maybe a few people but it is a small percentage of people.

You do realize that all of Crossfield except a small part, already goes to Carson now right? If Crossfield is fine with Carson, which they are, and Skyview will be the same as Carson as you claim, they should be fine with Skyview.

Oh wait…something something rooted in a zip code 10 miles away something something.

The irony of the rooted in Oakton people is their lobbying to be sent to a “poorer” performing middle school (Franklin) which, let’s be honest, is masked by the fact that their AAP kids will stay at Carson anyway.

In summary, they got their entire school moved to a lower performing middle school, knowing their own kids would stay at the higher performing middle school, all to justify their weird obsession with a high school an hour from their house by bus.

I hope the school board sees right through that.

I always love these posts. I have a kid in 8th grade at Carson, he has not heard of kids bringing knives to school or kids reselling stolen Walmart merchandise. He has not talked to me about fights but his friends mention to girl fights that they see.

Far more then 1/3 of the school is taking AAP and Honors classes. Far more then a 1/3 of the school are following the rules. The number of disciplinary issues involving weapons is really small and probably on par with most of the non-Title 1 MS. And I would guess that you have these issues at Oakton as well, I am reasonably certain that the last OD email involved a student from Oakton so it isn't all sun shine and perfect children.

Skyview will be a strong school with plenty of kids who are interested in learning, some great clubs, and all the things that parents want for their kids. There will be disciplinary issues because teens are teens and do stupid things. That happens at Oakton as well as Langley as well as McNair and every other HS in the County. The families we know at Herndon and Lewis, and we know many families at both schools, don't worry about their kids safety. They like the schools their kids are at. No one I know at SLHS has been worried about their kids safety or has had any real issue with the school or the community. Maybe you need to leave your bubble and realize that many of your fears are in your head and not reality. Or you can look at the rare case and overreact.

Yeah but have you considered that the person you're responding to has it on "good authority" that there are Hispanic kids at the school, so there have to be knives and kids selling stuff they've stolen? Ya know, because they're Hispanic!
