I wouldn't read too much into Mamdani's victory. This was the Democratic Establishment once again screwing everything up by forcing yet another horrible candidate - Andrew Cuomo - on voters. Which opened the door to more fringe candidates. Mamdani does not have much support among the working class. I suspect Mayor Adams actually has a decent shot at reelection now. New Yorkers aren't as progressive as people seem to assume. If Bloomberg was on the ballot, he'd win overwhelmingly over this clown show.

Mamdani's agenda depends on funding from raising taxes which, shocker, a mayor can't unilaterally do. It's all pie in the sky fantasy.

Maybe for once step back and realize that maybe the upper middle class who overwhelmingly voted for Mamdani want a social safety net for everyone, want to protect the cab drivers and laborers who have built this city and want access to subsidized childcare and and hosting that this rich city is more than capable of providing.

How do you not understand that Mamdani can't do much of anything he has promised. He has no ability to raise any tax other than property tax, which would hurt the middle class and make the top 5% flee NYC--and they pay a significant % of the income tax. NY constitutionally has to balance its budget. He will have to take services away or decrease from the very people who actually use them. He (and his team) are creating a fairy tale and getting politically unsophisticated people to vote for him.

I think the biggest problem he can cause would be with policing and the police. The mayor has the ability to install the chief of police. NYC was cleaned up in part by bringing in very tough chiefs of police. After de Blasio, Adams ran as a former police officer who promised to clean up de Blasio's mess. It's already an uphill battle due to the huge influx of illegal immigrants that have overwhelmed the city's resources, combined with Zero Bail.

NYC is estimated to have a 4.5B deficit by 2027, and that is before any additional spending proposed by Mamdani.
