Why are Northern Kids Flocking to Southern Universities?

But it still is NOT that states are budgeting better-it all comes back to the sports program

In contrast to those super kind University of Michigan students in the north who torment uber drivers with profane racism and hate speech.

"You’re an Uber driver. Go f***ing drive, you little f***," a student was filmed saying. "Minimum wage fa**ot. Go f*** yourself."

Look, my point wasn’t that they are any worse, just that the south isn’t better

Those comments were made by north-easterners.

Actually I heard they were made by students from the DMV area. You know, southerners.

I know three Tufts grads and they are the most miserable human beings to be around. Negative, jealous, selfish, depressed. But I think it is 100% coincidence, not the school.

Hotter kids? How do you figure? The South has higher obesity rates.

Because those fat people aren't going to college, much less to their state flagship.

Not really. Dc types are urban and relatively sophisticated. They may technically below the Mason-Dixon Line but so is everyone else on dcum!

It’s not necessarily hotter students — there’s more variability.

There are way more fat students at Alabama or auburn than Boston college

I wouldn’t recommend going south for “hotter dating options” unless you measure up yourself

Probably better to go to NESCAC where you are at least guarunteed some baseline level of aesthetics

Ha! Seems you have not been to Alabama. Every kid is fit. Walking around it is really noticeable how in shape and cute everyone is.

No, not the explanation. All the kids I know that finances were not concern chose NC State, Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina, etc over College Park. Kids want better experience and perceive the weather, landscape and amenities of southern schools superior. If this is still surprising to you, go visit Auburn and the Rutgers or UMass and respond back. Seriously, please do that or better yet have your 17 year old do that. They are somewhat equivalent academically.

This. SEC schools tend to be well-run. They are also putting their sports money into the schools and providing amazing research opportunities, amenities, study abroad, scholarships, etc.

My kid noticed how extremely good looking most of the kids were at all the southern schools (Auburn, Clemson, UofSC, SMU)

Also, Ole Miss, Tulane, Alabama. Lots of attractive students.

Actually, I wouldn't doubt that they have. If someone got into both, they're likely getting a free ride at Alabama, versus potentially 80,000 a year for Harvard, or whatever it is now. Cost matters to some people more than "prestige."

This. Plenty of kids choosing southern state schools over Ivies, especially if headed to grad school or med school and don't want the debt at the undergrad level.

Credible evidence for this? Highly doubtful, unless your definition "plenty" is skewed.

Harvard (and some other Ivies) is fabulously wealthy so no one pays close to $80K unless they're very well off -- and those people don't care about a full ride at Tuscaloosa.
