| I'm in favor of taking care of the most vulnerable. Bring back the low income and IEP kids and others identified by staff, spread them out over all the schools and the rest of us somehow manage because we are decent human beings and we take care of the weakest amongst us be they physically at risk of dying of needing extra resources to learn. Accept that maybe our kids won't get every single advantage to which we think they are entitled but they will still be ok and maybe the gift they will get is understanding that we rise or fall together. |
Amen. |
I can't believe someone is describing school[u] as "every single advantage to which we think they are entitled." Kids aren't entitled to school?! And no, they won't be ok. |
They're not getting no school. They just aren't getting the kind of schooling that we would prefer they have. Would you have someone's mother die so Larlo doesn't have to take math twice? I wouldn't but that's just me. There are few character defining moments for a nation. This is one of them. Who will we be? So far, not so good. |

I want distance learning for my kids. I have the means to make it a great experience. If schools open just for those who cannot find childcare, fine. |
So I agree that the most vulnerable (but physically healthy) should get the in person learning first from MCPS. But that’s when we look elsewhere for online learning from a private online school for DD (unless MCPS really gets it together). Because my child also deserves an education. And we have to think of this as lasting the full year. I don’t think it will bother MCPS for kids to go elsewhere, as they need to de-densify like everyone else. |
Yes, they are. They are getting no school. As you say, there are some character-defining moments for a nation. This is one of them. Will we be people who open nail salons and force people to keep working at meat-packing plants, but keep schools closed? So far, not so good. |
Fabulous. Take them out of MCPS. More space for the other kids. |
Will we be people who force paras, bus drivers, building service workers and subs to expose themselves to the coronavirus when we could do DL instead? |
Cyberspace?
|
We aren't going to force them to expose themselves to the coronavirus any more than any other people doing their job. Also, when you say "we could do DL instead," who's "we"? Also, define "learning." On-line school simply does not work for lots and lots and lots of kids, even if you think it ought to. |
Maybe I can decrease the amount I pay in taxes to be equal to the crap education my kids are getting from distance learning. |
I don't think nail salons should be open. You gotta have food though. I would advocate better conditions and PPE for the meat plant workers as well as hazzard pay. Again, they are getting school, its just not as you would want it. |
One could say the same thing if they were collecting tickets at the circus, too. They're getting school, just not as I would want it! And then there are the kids who never did anything: https://wtop.com/maryland/2020/05/md-survey-shows-distance-learning-disparities-but-hardest-hit-school-districts-arent-revealed/ I advocate PPE for teachers and staff, doing their jobs at school. |
Nope, not until January (if we're lucky). |
