FCPS School Board candidates in Dranesville

The boundary consultant has only been retained to provide advice on best practices relating to boundary adjustments. It’s not specific to McLean. Meanwhile Palathingal - on the heels of Wilson and Schultz not supporting the Langley/McLean boundary study - said at a meeting at Mantua ES in late October he would rather keep kids in trailers than change boundaries.

I’m sure that sounds good if you think your school might only need a handful of trailers. Not so good when your school is a trailer park. He will not get my vote.

The school board had an RFP for a boundary consultant out in Sept and the bid is now closed. The RFP is available at https://m.vendor.epro.cgipdc.com/Vendor/public/VBODetails.jsp?PageTitle=SO%20Details&DOC_CD=RFP&Details_Page=VBOSODetails.jsp&DEPT_CD=LAA4&BID_INTRNL_NO=152600&BID_NO=3100000402&BID_VERS_NO=1

Braddock District Rep -Meagan McLaughlin defined the purpose of the RFP as " both the community and the Board in examining national best practices to address existing overcrowding and anticipated overcrowding that may come from 2 major county developments: Tysons Corner and Route 1 Corridor. "

Eastern Fairfax County has a huge surplus now at the high school level and will have mega surplus after the bond. 3 high schools now have space for boundary changes : Langley, Lee, Mount Vernon and to a lesser extent Annandale and some at about 90% utilization. Except for Langley in Northern part of the county all with open space are in eastern Fairfax. West County schools might as well be in Loudoun or Prince William County for all the attention and resources they get.

No planning just piecemeal additions. Add in progress and future and you get a new high school where it's actually needed.

The South Lakes redistricting was 12 years ago. Try to move on like others have. Not every decision will make everyone happy.

You didn't get the point. The point was that families don't want boundary changes even when it is to a "better" school like Oakton. And, there are good reasons.

I understood your point. It doesn’t have the same impact when it was 12 years ago and most of the affected neighborhoods are now happily at South Lakes. Nor does it have much relevance to the Dranesville race, when only two of the current SB members were on the Board and neither is seeking re-election.

But, please, keep nursing your ancient wounds and ignoring the real lesson from the South Lakes situation, which is that change is hard but sometimes necessary. If you can’t come to terms with that, maybe you can move to Falls Church City. Arlington and Montgomery change boundaries as often as Fairfax, and Loudoun and Prince William change them more frequently.

Nope. You don't get it. I have no "wounds"--in fact, my neighborhood stayed put. My point was about Chantilly kids moving to Oakton. You know--from a lower SES school to a "better" one. My kids had friends that were moved. PP had claims that Langley parents are upset about moving to Herndon. My point is that it likely has nothing to do with Herndon and everything to do with wanting to stay put. But, you keep blaming everything on racism. I get it. And, FWIW, my neighborhood was successful in staying put. We weren't moved, so I have no "wounds" as you claim.

No one has yet explained what Herndon is going to do with extra kids.

This, exactly. It’s a fever dream for some of these “progressives”. They desperately want to socially engineer the Langley/Herndon boundary, no matter that it makes zero sense. Now, if Herndon was under enrolled and Langley was over enrolled , then yes - moving kids from Langley to Herndon would make perfect sense. But that’s exactly the opposite situation.

Such a straw-man argument. No one plans to move any Langley kids to Herndon now.

If there were a new high school in a decade in western Fairfax, of course all the boundaries there might change. At that point it would be stupid to keep busing kids 12 miles to Langley, if there were closer options.

Grow up. We are tired of your whining and stupid You Tube videos.

How about YOU grow up? The only reason people have been talking about this is because the SB was caught on video discussing this potential option. Now that it’s gotten out, they have realized what an absurd idea it was. It wouldn’t have been publicized had some astute parents not caught on and exposed the SB. I’m grateful that they did.

So you admit this “potential option” only really came up in the context of what may happen if another high school gets built in western Fairfax in a decade or so? Maybe in 2023 the uptight Great Falls parents will be able to find a more timely concern to obsess about.

One more day.

I'm sorry for you if you hate democracy so much that you don't want to let the facts get in the way of the Democratic party's "entitlement" to control the school board. The only ones obsessing are the board members an the other supporters of a faith in "equity" that isn't backed by a shred of evidence. There. Is. No. Evidence. that socioeconomic "equity" improves student achievement. None. Period.

Others beg to differ; for example:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.virginia.edu/content/understanding-benefits-school-diversity-majority-minority-age%3famp

1. Contains no evidence.
2. Conflates ethnic and socioeconomic diversity.
3. Also conflates the two.
4. Ethnic diversity only.
5. No facts, just opinion.

The triumph of emotion over facts. That's all the Democrats have to offer.

1. Dranesville Tholen
2. At large Rachna
3. At large Priscilla
4. At large Vinson

Had to split my vote - not one candidate without major negatives.
Divided government, in this case, seems best - no Trumpy control, no One Fairfax hegemony.

So sending a bunch of great students from Langley to Herndon will solve all the gang issues because....diversity?

What is Priscilla’s position on addressing McLean overcrowding? Seems like she’d did not respond to McSpaces.

No way am I voting for Omeish or Keys Gamarra with their extremely ambivalent position on the issue.

Rachna is good. She is empathetic.

Vinson is a nutcase. Just heard him talk about Eastern European immigrants not knowing about parent participation in schools. His brand of social conservatism is just nasty.

Buford is ok. That makes 2.

So what is Priscilla’s position on McLean?

And where is Moon?

Dems chose Omeish over Moon.

The Republicans at our polling place had big “Change the Board, Not the Boundaries” signs.

So I guess that is Priscilla’s position on McLean: leave kids there in trailers so the Langley families who are more likely to vote R don’t have to worry about Langley ever getting overcrowded.

I guess it doesn't matter now, but Priscilla said that they should adjust the boundaries between McLean and Langley temporarily until the expansion at McLean is complete. I don't think she likes trailers. She also said they should grandfather seniors and allow those who wish to continue at McLean to do so with their own transportation.

That’s a sensible position but it gets obscured when Vinson tells people he would rather have kids in trailers than change boundaries and the Republicans show up at precincts in Dranesville with big “Change the Board, Not the Boundaries” signs.

Hopefully whoever is elected will do right by the kids and stop holding them hostage to their political debates/battles.

I grew up with Priscilla. I wouldn’t vote for her for class secretary (not that she ran, teen mom stuff to deal with) never mind public office.

Dems swept almost everything tonight.

And somehow, choking and sputtering, Schultz managed to survive that blue wave and now we're stuck with her Trumpy BS for I don't even know how long.
