Subtle signs of class

Not asking what the "subtle signs of class' are?

We make $300k + retirement + investments but no trusts except an interest in a rather large acreage in a family trust but nothing titled to us besides our house and our starter home.

We have 1 DC with a name like Charlotte "last name as middle name". Charlotte X's college and grad school, should she choose to pursue it, are fully funded by another family trust. She currently attends public school, but there is funding available for private. We live in close-in 20816 in an old but renovated single family house.

This is just for fun, so don't say something like your class is ZERO because it's tacky to ask!

I may have posted this way back as a PP;

- expansive vocabulary
- impeccable grammar and usage
- clear, articulate speech
- no swearing, most especially in public, but also never in casual conversation
- and I'll add neat or artistic handwriting. Go ahead and say you are an MD or PhD who has illegible writing, but I contend that I can guess the background of many by handwriting alone

Bringing food to HS pot luck for the team and sitting away from other moms who are using their hands to whisper to each other while kids eat, while you read a book. Leaving and telling them, "thank you so much for organizing it." Grace in every situation and not of the archaic "take a back seat woman" type. Distant slightly to others, no omg, no screeching like you never left HS.

PP is clearly UMC, and her family has been this way for several generations. Dwelling on her DD's name is a bit odd, but perhaps she mentioned it to note her DD does not have a DCUM-dreaded stripper name. I would say she is teetering on UC but choosing public over private is not a usual UC choice.

Anonymous wrote:I think class (not talking about SES) is more the lack of certain behaviors and signifiers. For example, here are things that are low-class:

Being very loud in public
Talking about money, either having or not-having it, but especially having it
Clothes too trendy or too showy, with logos on every item
Rudeness to others, especially to those in the service industry
Having lots of drama
Trying too hard to impress
Power-networking, in DC, or being a social media influencer
Name-dropping, school-dropping, or job-dropping
Inability to maintain pleasant small talk with just-mets or acquaintances/getting too personal, too fast

+1

All of these are pointing towards being low-key and avoiding attention. I agree- good list.

Believe it or not, some of us high social standing folks are actually people of color, and we do have emotional reactions to politics when people who look like us are being harmed disproportionately. Not getting personal means you have privilege.

Class usually means:

-Has a credit card
-Owns a toothbrush..and maybe toothpaste
-Got all that english when they speaks
-Name brand condoms

-Got a metro card with some money on it
-Can name some other countries
-No boogers on the wall or furniture
-Mostly clean underwear
-Eats salads
-Follows the "if it's yellow let it mellow; it its brown flush it down" rule
-Makes the installment every month for Fingerhut and payday loans

I'd say FH is UMC (she's obviously a striver) and LL is rich trash in the vein of Britney Spears.

True UC wouldn't cheat on their applications. They have morals and they don't need to do something so trashy anyway. They'd already have an established relationship with the university of their choice and they'd make a sizable 7 figure donation to get their airhead daughters in.

They’re both actresses, which is a small step above prostitution. Both are trashy.

A true lady’s name is in the paper the day she is born, the day she marries and the day she dies, and no more.

Also the day the wins an election in a landslide, writes the majority decision in a landmark case, performs an innovative surgery and saves lives, takes her company public and shares rise sharply, or so many other ways a true lady's name can appear in the paper.

PP said "true lady" not "kick-a$$ woman."

UMC. This post is primarily about education, which is MC to UMC. Since pp has several generations of higher income professionals in her family, I peg her as UMC rather than MC.

I definitely think differently about people who post things like this. Definitely a sign of "station anxiety".
