Re: all the people making a distinction between Felicity Huffman and Lori Laughlin.
I'd say FH is UMC (she's obviously a striver) and LL is rich trash in the vein of Britney Spears. True UC wouldn't cheat on their applications. They have morals and they don't need to do something so trashy anyway. They'd already have an established relationship with the university of their choice and they'd make a sizable 7 figure donation to get their airhead daughters in. |
Due to a lack of a true aristocracy to create clear dividing lines, class in the US is a total mess. That's why people associate UC with WASPs...they are the only group in the US to have a multi-century history of wealth and power. Given that you have family money you can rely on for things like kids' education, I would say you are UMC or UC depending on which definition you use. As you can see, some people will refuse to call anyone UC if they aren't worth at least 8 figures. Personally, I think there is a clear difference between first generation UMC and multi-generational UMC (like you)...and one way or another it's important to make that distinction, because it matters. |
She's only UC if she's inheriting at least 7 figures. Doesn't sound like she is though. Sounds like there is a family foundation and she only gets a tiny % for education and down payments. I find that to be pretty common among families that used to have money. |
yeah this! How do people not understand this? You can't be "upper class" if you're not rich! |
As I said, people will draw the line in different places, and the first PP falls near a boundary. Most UMC people won't inherit anything substantial...there is a meaningful difference between someone earning $300K who knows their family will take care of their kids' college vs. not. If you can't see that, I don't know what to say. |

They’re both actresses, which is a small step above prostitution. Both are trashy. |
I think class (not talking about SES) is more the lack of certain behaviors and signifiers. For example, here are things that are low-class:
Being very loud in public Talking about money, either having or not-having it, but especially having it Clothes too trendy or too showy, with logos on every item Rudeness to others, especially to those in the service industry Having lots of drama Trying too hard to impress Power-networking, in DC, or being a social media influencer Name-dropping, school-dropping, or job-dropping Inability to maintain pleasant small talk with just-mets or acquaintances/getting too personal, too fast |
|
When I see a home with a TV in every room (especially the kitchen) and at least one is always on (especially at an elevated volume with nobody really watching it), I immediately think “low class”. |
Interesting so many people equate class with money and stuff.
So if that's true, then people like Gandhi, Jesus, Mother Teresa, etc. have (had?) no class. |
A true lady’s name is in the paper the day she is born, the day she marries and the day she dies, and no more. |
Asking strangers for validation on dcum immediately moves you to the LC. Sorry sweetie. |
Somewhat agree. I would say that you’re UMC because upper class would never share all this or wonder where they stand. Maybe if I met you IRL I’d think you were upper class, but it would depend on your manners, mannerisms, and dress. Talking about what you have would immediately rule out upper class. |
I’m sorry but Britney Spears and LL are not in the same category. I don’t see Britney manipulating and cheating. I also don’t see her as a striver. She has a nice reputation of being kind and friendly, she just has cheesy taste. |
