What about other mothers who are considering who need to hire someone? I would not be comfortable hiring someone like the birth assistant involved. Other home birth mothers in the community are entitled to this information. |
I guess my question for the group then is this: are lay midwives like Karen qualified to advise their clients on medical risks even though they are not licensed medical providers? Or put another way, should mom's feel safe relying on the risk/benefit analysis of someone who is not actually a medical provider? The standard of care for a nurse is different than the standard of care for an OB...what's the standard of care for a lay midwife? I think that's important for everyone to know and I'm curious if anyone has some insight on this question and also the normative question of what the standard of care SHOULD be. Lower than any medical provider, some medical providers? These are the things that have kept me thinking about all of this. |
As others have posted - it is really easy to figure out who is was. That said - why would you automatically not feel comfortable hiring "someone like the birth assistant involved" when no factual details have been released about what happened? And, if you were interviewing doulas or birth assistants, you could certainly ask that person directly if they were involved in this case or any other cases where there had been bad outcomes. |
Then you need to ask pointed questions of anyone you are hiring. Take it up with BirthCare if use choose to use them for their birth. Anonymous people, who weren't present at the birth and do not know the full circumstances shouldn't be posting the BA or doulas name so a bunch of other anonymous people can go around spreading unsubstantiated rumors about them. |
Feh. I'll be taking a Bradley class by one of the three instructors in Old Town soon and I have no idea if my instructor is the birth assistant in question. I wouldn't know because I don't know if she's a birth assitant at BirthCare or not....I'm not a client there. I would like to know if it's her though before I shell out the 500 bucks for the class. Thinking about forfeiting my deposit anyway. |
THE MOTHER HERSELF posted a review online about the birth center and the birth assistant. It would be nice to know who she's talking about. |
Can't you call her up and ask her? Are your Bradley classes being held at Birthcare? There seem to be much easier ways of figuring this out than waiting for a post on DCUM. |

If you are taking the class AT birth care, it could be the birth assistant in question. |
No birth assistants are on the witness list. Curious no? |
The birth assistant in question has taken town her LinkedIn profile where she lists herself as a Bradley instructor, Midwife student, AND a Birth Care Birth Assistant. |
Oh come on, even Karen Carr's lawyer said in his statement that she had a birth assistant AND a doula. |
I was unable to get a list of Birth Care birth assistants from the website. Is it still there? Did they take it down or do you have to call? |
Actually, she hasn't. |
So maybe the birth assistant became the doula? |
