Midwife charged in DC? Karen Carr, CPM...

Anonymous
OK, this is 16:09 back again - I was confused -

CPMs can be licensed in Virginia. There is legislation pending in Maryland to allow them to be licensed in that state. But no such law in the District, apparently! I do know of many CPMs who practice in DC and MD despite having no option to license here...they consider their profession and calling and a service to women who wish to birth their children out of the hospital.

MOVING ALONG - does anyone actually know what happened?

My attitude is partially because of post 15:53 and I have not heard anything from any of my midwifery contacts and normally there are alerts for things like this. But that doesn't mean anything, sometimes news travels slow. I will keep my eyes open but if what the OP said is what happened then it's probably similar to the Medwin case- you call for help and all heck breaks loose. I would blame it on the lack of licensing but there's another case and the CPM IS licensed in that state so pardon my negative attitude but I get fired up about this.

In DC it is "Prohibited by Statute, Judicial Interpretation, or Stricture of Practice"

This is about direct-entry midwives, not certified nurse-midwives, who are legal in DC if licensed.

The same difference occurs in the law. In most states you have to go to law school and pass the bar to practice as a lawyer. Virginia is one of the few where you can study under an existing lawyer and then pass the bar - a form of "direct entry".

You can look up disciplinary info in DC on the Dept of Health website. There are two Karen Carr records, both expired, no disciplinary action noted on either.

Probably she was an LPN, then let that lapse when she got her RN. Nothing on here about a midwife license. This website would show other local licenses (MD/VA) too if there were any.

OP - where's your info from?
Anonymous
There is no Karen Carr licensed on the VA state website for midwifery or nursing.
Anonymous
My info is from the health licensing boards from both Dc and VA. This is info is easily accessible for all licensed health professionals off state websites. I have a health license myself, so I know this.

You just do online health license searches off their websites. Takes two seconds.

OP here, I heard from a woman who had Karen as a midwife.

I live in DC, and am also interested in making CPMs legal in DC. I am pregnant and planning a home birth with a CPM in DC as well, and consequently am interested in finding out how the DC gov handles hospital transfers. Also, I've heard and read nothing but glowing reviews of Karen Carr as a midwife, so I was also concerned about her specifically.

There is a super old (1995) city paper article about another CPM named Karen and Karen Carr is quoted. Maybe you got garbled info?

As far as I can tell, OP is just another DCUM hysteric spreading false information. The midwife that was prosecuted was karen Hunter, according to the city paper. Way to slander OP.

Maryland recently changed its law to license CPMs and CNMs and drop its requirement for them to practice under the supervision of a physician. I thought DC had already done this.

My understanding is that DC treats CNMs the same way it treats nurse practitioners, which is to allow them to practice without physician supervision. CPMs, however, are a different story.

Karen Carr is a talented midwife and a person who I couldn't have more respect for--she is remarkable. She caught 2 of my children and I hope this is all a stupid DCUM rumor. Karen is the best.

Why not contact Karen, get the real story, post it alone, and ask Jeff to remove this thread.

If someone wants to start a separate thread about licensing in DC, have at it.
