Why not contact Karen, get the real story, post it alone, and ask Jeff to remove this thread.

If someone wants to start a separate thread about licensing in DC, have at it.

There is no story. A midwife named Karen Hunter was charged for something similar after a birth in 1995. Karen Carr gave a quote in a City Paper article about midwives that addressed the Hunter charges. Good grief.

Look, I made the suggestion because I think there is no story. How do we know OP's "rumor" came from the old city paper article? Better to prove that there is no story.

You may be in a profession where the "boards" publish online right away but I am not. It can take a long time.

Repeat: I am trying to CLEAR Karr's name. Let's just do it and be done with it.

Why is it awful if it is illegal?

Because women have a right to choose whatever care provider they want. They have a right to choose anyone or a right to choose no one. Should they choose someone to tend to their homebirth they should not have to worry that the provider will hesitate to transfer if necessary due to being afraid of prosecution.

If something happened to go wrong, what would be the next step? A trip to the emergency room of the local hospital?

NP here. Something did "go wrong" with my homebirth -- baby's heart tones dropped into a range in which it was unsafe to continue to labor at home. So... we got into the car, with our CPM, her doppler and my records, and drove to L&D. Which was expecting us, because my CPM had phoned ahead, and which seamlessly (and without blaming or shaming) took over my care. Baby was delivered with healthy APGARs, thanks to my midwife's careful monitoring and the hospital's additional firepower.

Of course, this was in Virginia, which licenses CPMs and CNMs. Because everything was above-board, not one precious second was wasted trying to do anything other than give my baby and I the absolute best care possible. Women in DC should be so lucky as to have both their care providers and the city bureaucracy on their side.

I'm the PP who asked what happens, so I read your experience with great interest. So glad all turned out well for you and your baby! Yes, I agree that it should be able to work the way you described--not the time to have any barriers to a newborn's or mom's health.

This is the most horrifying story I've ever read!!! They wrapped the newborn's baby in GAUZE and kept the baby in the house without any medical treatment over the weekend?????

They ran from the police?????

They hired a midwife who refused to get the necessary medical training??? Who broke their child's arm during delivery????

Sick.

It was 16 years ago. That child is now driving a car. Apparently the arm healed fine.

Maybe they have one of those handles that attaches to the wheel so you can drive with one arm

No, unfortunately it is Karen Carr who is in trouble now. Out of respect for this very talented and respected midwife, I am not going to mention details until they have been officially released.
