The bolded is illegal. DC is breaking the law. Any lawyers here? |
It's already been in the WP and HUD is aware. Google. It's DC, unlikely to change, except for the dollar amount to increase. Likely kickbacks coming out of that extra dosh, good luck cutting that off. |
yes, I have been following it from the days when it just 'seemed' like a bad idea, to learning that it is factually illegal. Is it time to take citizen action on this travesty? Any lawyers? |
Did anyone attend? |
Truth! |
I walked by the group when they were walking, Frumin was not there. There were maybe a dozen + people and 4-5 MPD? MPD does community meetings, coffee with a cop events, etc. pretty regularly. Usually announced on Next Door but you could contact your police district directly to get on a mailing list, I suppose. There is an upcoming meeting in Ward 3 with the incoming police chief in October. Frumin mentioned it, details still to be finalized/announced. |
I live nearby and out of curiosity looked at the website for The Saratoga. It lists @12 vacant units at the moment. It has not been a full 30 days to give notice since the shooting, so that number may increase next month. |
DP. I think this bill is utterly bizarre. So it forces the landlord to basically agree to sublets with no control? |
It’s not against the law becuase DC gov intentionally set the rate to allow above market rates specifically encourage more voucher rentals! This happened in 2018 I believe. Unsaid is that above market rates also cover the damage to units caused by renting to unstable, addicts, mentally ill tenants. The city got exactly what they wanted from the program. |
And costs to evict, although since DC does not pull vouchers, they typically move to another building in the immediate area. "Returning citizens" ie., convicts, also receive housing vouchers. For anyone following the case in Baltimore, know that DC law only allows a landlord to look back 7 years for a criminal conviction, so how many people like Jason Billingsly being put in buildings on Connecticut, Wisconsin, etc.? How is it that someone who is a registered sex offender can do work as a maintenance man in rental housing? 7 years is not nearly long enough for violent crimes like rape, murder, ADW to be considered by landlords. |
While DC contemplates making rental housing more chaotic, CA Dem pols are moving in a direction that may do more than profiteer on human misery, by addressing root causes.

Frumin was too busy working on his 2026 campaign slogans. He’s narrowed it down to “Frumin 2026: It’s A Really Complicated Problem” or “Frumin 2026: The Other Wards Have It Worse”. Which is better? |
Nadeau needs to be recalled. She is absolutely stupid in all things. this idea to let tenants rent out someone elses home is insane. More and more landlords I know with ne or two units are now selling them because being a small time landlord is not worth it anymore. Thus taking more rental units off the market and driving up scarcity of units. |
Stay alert if you, your kids or neighbors take the L2. I've seen this guy before but w/o the hatchet, brass knuckles or knife play. He does usually have the bike. Keep the WMATA police text number in your phone and also call 911 when you or he gets off and it's safe to do so. Sometimes WMATA LE is far away and 911 may choose to send MPD.
This is a serious safety issue on what used to be a very safe bus line. https://www.reddit.com/r/washdc/comments/173ye96/hatchet_wielding_passenger_on_l2_bus/ |
