How much sleep is enough for an 11 year old?

Anonymous
Is 8 hours enough? Like for 3 nights a week and 9-10 on other nights?

No, I don't think that's enough. 9-11 is the recommended amount. Though each child is different and if you find that your child seems to be fine with that amount of sleep, maybe it is enough.

Mine sleeps from 9:30pm-7:30am on school nights, and the same amount of hours on weekends, but more like 11pm-9am.

According to WebMd.com,

7-12 Years Old: 10 - 11 hours per day

My son is 11.5 and just this summer is going to bed later and later. Recently he seems to be sleeping from about 10:30 to 7:15. It seems like way too little as far as I'm concerned but he's told me he feels fine. I make him go to his room and read or listen to podcast starting at about 8:45 and it's up to him on whatever he wants to do with his time until he falls asleep, as long as he stays in his room.

Same here. And more on the weekends.

My DS gets 8.5 to 9 hours on school nights. He is a straight A student. I am not proud of this. Wish he would sleep more. But he has full time working parents and by the time we get home, do homework, and "connect" it is 930 to 10 pm. He has no phone access during week.

Just Sharing.

Mine generally sleeps 9:30-6:30. I have no idea how any kid that age would find the time to sleep 10-11 hours on a school night. He's not even playing a sport at the moment but has lots of homework this year in 6th grade.

My 10 year old sleeps 9-6 on weeknights. He gets in bed around 8 and reads for a while. Last year he fell asleep right when he got in bed at 8, so I think he's needing less sleep this year. He seems to be mostly well rested and he still gets up between 6-7am on weekends.

Mine is usually in bed and asleep by 7:45 and wakes up at 6:00. Sometimes he goes down earlier. he starts bedtime at 7:00 other than on soccer nights (2 nights a week).

I am really big on sleep. Important for long term health and learning. We don't skimp on sleep.

DS is 12 and he is on the low sleep end and always has been. Bedtime at 9:30 and asleep about 10. He wakes up on his own at 6:30/7.

I am thrilled if DD gets 8.5 hours, 9 and I am really patting my self on the back.

When does he do his homework? Serious question.

10, usually. Mine is in bed at 8pm, reads for half an hour and asleep by 9, usually. Up at 7am.

We changed our working schedules a year ago so they wake at 7 instead of 6. I did this after seeing them being tired and grouchy in the morning. The change has them generally perky/happy. I don't particularly like the longer work day for us, but it's worth it to see them getting 260 extra hours of sleep a year.

I am not that poster, but mine goes to sleep at 8, so 15 minutes later. He does his homework after school. If he has an after school activity then it's after that before or after dinner. He doesn't have a ton of work, usually 30 minutes total of studying, plus maybe 10 - 20 minutes more a few nights a week on math or language arts, and extra time studying for a few nights before a test.

There is a good chunk of time between when school is out and 8pm. At 7, we do one on one time with card games, basketball, pillow fights, etc., and at 7:30 we read together, so that hour is usually not used for homework. Today the first half hour was, for extra time studying for a test tomorrow. This was due to an after school activity so he was starting an hour after school let out, and he wanted to play outside for a bit before starting.

They do not do chores during the week other than emptying/filling the dishwasher and walking the dogs.

It fits. What is taking up the time, or what are we not doing? Does yours have more homework?
