+1 Creepy. WTF? |
| Well, DCUMers in this forum can no longer say that the conservative thought is not represented on college campuses. Guarantee that what's going on this weekend at UVA will spread to other campuses....torches, confederate flags, and all. |
| Truly horrifying what is happening in this country. |
The demonstration isn't coming from the UVa community, it's outside people coming onto campus to demonstrate. I think UVa is in the unfortunate position of being in a state where the politics are especially ripe for this sort of thing (red state turned purple because of the influx of Democrats into the state, conservatives feel like they're losing their state), and UVa is a flashpoint because there's so much old symbolism on the campus that calls to the white nationalists/white supremacists/miscellaneous bigots, but the area has become increasingly liberal so there's more of a push now to remove that symbolism. |
But the supremacist have been allowed to march through UVA, a pattern that may be permitted at state universities (state property). Many state universities are adjacent to public streets so it's not unreasonable to think that copycat white supremacists will follow the UVA lead. |
| Private universities also share public adjacent roads that traverse along side and through campuses. UChicago, Yale, etc, fit that category, not like insulated private campuses. |
I'm not sure what your point is. It's not like UVa and the city of Charlottesville are just popping popcorn and watching it unfold, they're doing as much as they can within the bounds of the First Amendment. Sure, other people might use this to target campuses, but the same theory you put forth about public streets applies just as well to lots of public parks, government buildings, etc. I think the repeat targeting of UVa like this has more to do with what I described above (changing Virginia demographics/politics and UVa symbolism) than with the fact that UVa is a university. |
| This sort of garbage will reduce applications. |
| ^^^I never said that Charlottesville and the state were sitting back eating popcorn and enjoying a TV show. Totally unnecessary comment. Your nasty comment no longer merits my civil debate. |
UVA may be in the "unfortunate position of being in a state where the politics are especially ripe for this sort of thing" but don't forget that the majority of the student body comes from that state as well. |
That is patently irrelevant. |
| Can't we all just get along. Let's return to the good ole days of affirmative action for us Whites alone. Please. |
| I think VA Tech is also a bit cursed. |
