Is the UVA Campus cursed?

Just got to send in Jake and Elwood.

These people deserve a right to demonstrate as much as anyone else, as long as there's no violence.

I don't get why they are getting so much attention though, as they don't deserve it. Why not just ignore them?
Anonymous
How can you simply ignore them? These cretins voted for Trump our national leader. With the global mess their fearless leader is creating I suspect we should all just ignore Trump (and his Russian friends and business partners)?

The demonstration isn't coming from the UVa community, it's outside people coming onto campus to demonstrate. I think UVa is in the unfortunate position of being in a state where the politics are especially ripe for this sort of thing (red state turned purple because of the influx of Democrats into the state, conservatives feel like they're losing their state), and UVa is a flashpoint because there's so much old symbolism on the campus that calls to the white nationalists/white supremacists/miscellaneous bigots, but the area has become increasingly liberal so there's more of a push now to remove that symbolism.

UVA may be in the "unfortunate position of being in a state where the politics are especially ripe for this sort of thing" but don't forget that the majority of the student body comes from that state as well.

The student body didn't organize this demonstration.

Unlike more prestigious and elite institutions of higher learning in America the student body of UVA is regional and largely reflects the local environment.

It is called free speech and it is a good thing we are allowed to do it, because surely people can see that kind of speech is abhorrent. Can't you trust your kids to know this sucks?

It's kind of bad optics to have Nazis marching with no opposition. Is that really hard to understand? Kinda like when Westboro Baptist Church turns up to protest some nonsense -- counter-protests always meet them. The message should be that people who disagree care enough to drag their butts outside and say so.

Yes, but since I am stopped frequently by police while driving as a professional through VA, I refuse to subject my children to similar harassment. There are far better options for university.

Many people can't trust their college kids do reliably do their laundry so no, no, they still need some guidance.

That is patently irrelevant.

If you say that the state is home to a bunch of hillbilly rednecks with far right tendencies and UVA draws the majority of its student body from said state then it is entirely relevant. Or do you think they only admit the same and decent Virginians? Based on recent events I'd say they admit a representative sample.

Free speech and the First Amendment don't apply to situations where violence is being invited. Considering protestors and counter-protestors are fist-fighting and someone drove a car into the ground and, according to a friend on the ground, at least one person is dead, yes that is inciting violence.

I wouldn't send my biracial kid there.
