My Sister took my cat to the Humane Society without asking me.

I moved to a new city for a job and left my cat at my Mom's house until I got settled into an apartment that would allow me to take my cat. My mom has dog, but the cat and dog were friendly. After about 3-4 months, my sister, who doesn't live there, took my cat to the Humane Society where they killed her. At Christmas , I came back to get the cat, then my mom told me what happpened to the cat and said she didn't know until afterwards.

My sister has no apologies or excuse for killing my cat, except that she thought I didn't want the cat anymore. I think she is a socio path. I am devastated and I don't think I can get past this.

Holy crap. I'm not sure I could get past it either, especially since she's not even sorry. I would seriously be calling her Cat Killer every time I was forced to see her.

Ugh. I can see why you moved to a new city.

But presumably this was 8 months ago. What's transpired since?

I'm surprised the shelter euthanized a cat before your mom had a chance to notice. How terrible.

Keep your distance from your sister, and I hope your mom will watch out for her dog - don't let your sister dogsit or care for it.

I feel like there's more to this story.

Why did it take you 3-4 months (don't you know how long?) to get settled into an apartment?

Your sister didn't kill the cat, btw, the Humane society obviously couldn't find a new home for it.

I would think this was a troll, except my former sister-in-law did this to their cat. My brother came home from work one day, and the cat was gone.

So this happened 8 months ago? How did you mom not notice? Also, why did your mother not tell you until you arrived back home?

OP waited too long. If you are asking someone to take your cat, you should expect maybe a week or possibly a month, not 4! Sister did the right thing.

Maybe Mom found caring for the cat a hardship and didn't have the heart/communication skills to tell you - so your sister intervened and now is taking the brunt of it. Not an excuse but a possible explanation.

Or maybe none of what she tells you is true. Maybe she accidentally ran over the cat with her car and then concocted this story.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Or the cat ran out the door and never came back.

Maybe there was a miscommunication, and your sister misunderstood. Why don't you just talk to her about it?

And this thread, immediately below, recommends taking the abandoned cat to the shelter.

OP here, my Mom never complained or told me she didn't want to care for my cat. I had many phone calls to my Mom during that time. I think she knew I would be upset and didn't want to face me. I don't believe my mom knew my sister was going to have the cat killed in advance. I think my sister is jealous of me and my success.

My mom knew I had a short term apartment lease that wouldn't allow pets and that I was going to transition to a permanent place and take my cat. I felt betrayed and still in shock.

Sounds like your mother complained to your sister. The fact she didn't tell you what happened right away says to me that she had some role in what happened. Maybe it was a hardship for your mom and you didn't pick up on it. You sound very young.

Maybe your sister is jealous of you, but that doesn't explain what happened to the cat.

OP here, I would have rather had my mom and sister cover the whole thing up with a story (cat got lost or hit by a car).

But instead my sister told me that she took it to the shelter because SHE thought I didn't want it anymore. She never said my mom complained about the cat. No one bothered to call me, or even tell me the truth until I came back to get the cat and couldn't find her. They didn't even bother to spare me the truth.
