My Sister took my cat to the Humane Society without asking me.

In DC they don't. They just ask a couple of question about the nature of the animal and determine based on the age and the temperament the likelihood of the animal being re-homed. If the animal has issues, it's killed pretty quickly.

That was my understanding of what typically happened, which is why I'm wondering how it is OP's mom was able to tell OP that the cat was dead instead of rehomed. And further, it makes "my sister killed me cat" excessively dramatic, even if the rest of OP's story is true.

If you call the shelter, they will tell you how long death row wait is depending on how full they are. Some times it's 24 hours. Adult cats are not 'popular' for adoption unless they are special in appearance. People want kittens.

Lesson: Don't trust your family. They are psychos.

I've never heard of a Humane Society that wasn't no-kill. Was the cat feral or aggressive? This story feels not quite true.

Yeah, this story doesn't add up. If it's true, the family is full of monsters, but..

I don't understand why you're posting about it now, though. Have you spoken to them since Christmas?

Yeah, it's hard to believe the sister could be that cruel.

I can't believe how mean people are being. The OP's in mourning for her pet. I don't think I could forgive someone who did this.

I can't believe people are so cruel to OP. Why couldn't the Mom and sister communicate "hey, this cat isn't working for us any more, please come and get it and take it to a boarding place.....". Seems way simpler than disappearing it and not telling her.

I have a crazy family too, OP, and they would totally do this to me.

Let me guess - you are White?

Ha? No, lesson: take care of your pets. It is your pet, it is your responsibility. Leaving a pet for a weekend or a week trip, maybe OK. For 3-4 month, No.

Maybe because they know OP very well?

My heart breaks for you OP.

Your sister is evil and karma will get her tenfold.

This is absolutely unforgivable and a huge deal breaker.

WTF is that supposed to mean? Black people don't mind if their sister kills their cat? Please explain.

This is not a racial issue. This is an animal cruelty issue. The sister should be in jail. I hope she does not have a job with animals or children.

OP I am so sorry. Our current 10yo cat is inherited from my sibling who ended up in a living situation that didn't allow for pets. We adore this cat and in fact just went through a horrible week where we thought the cat had a terminal illness and were totally devastated (thank G-d it turned out to be something else). I would go absolutely mental if someone did what your sister did and probably not speak to them for years, if ever again. Unforgivable. They should have said something to you first. You just don't DO that with someone's pet. Awful.
