A friend asked me to watch her cat while she was away, turns out she isn't coming back (long story that involves quitting her job, a married man, and moving to another state, but she'll be back!) and I am stuck with a cat I cannot have and do not want. What are my options?
I truly cannot have a cat in my apartment and thought I would be cat sitting for 5 days, it has been 3 weeks. What do I do? |
| Your friend is an ass. Google no-kill shelters, then phone around until you find one that will take it. |
A complete ass. I dont want anything bad to happen to the cat, but I just cannot keep it. |
| Did you tell her you can't keep it and ask what she wants you to do with it? Maybe she has someone else who can take it. |

I'd put something on FB attempting to re-home the kitty. Put up some cute pictures. Ask your friends to share. Say you'd need to take it to a shelter in a week if no one can take it.
Then, take it to shelter in a week. Give the kitty some nice belly rubs. |
Yes, she's not responding to me as she is too caught up with the drama with her job and married man. |
Is she the type of person who will suddenly decide several months from now that she wants her cat and then sue you for getting rid of the cat or something crazy like that? I would send something in writing that is sent via certified mail so you know she received it and inform her that you will be rehoming the cat. |
| If you're able contact rescues and offer a donation for the expense/trouble. That makes a difference. |

Take to Montgomery county shelter. Turn it in. Done.
Don't make this an issue. Not your cat, not your problem. |
I think OP should try to find it a home first. |
Advertise on CL. A cat lady will come pick it up for free. She might even pay you for it since the cat comes with a tragic story she can use to entertain people. |

Had to place a maintenance call and the person who came to work on my apartment called me out on the 3 cats. this cat has to go before I am fined or lose my apartment. what do I do? Friend has gone silent and wont respond to me. |
The cat, not the 3 cats. Ugh I am so upset.

First: is there anyone else you know who might be able to take in the cat while you figure out a more permanent solution.
Second: As someone above said, start calling every rescue and no-kill shelter you can find to ask if they can place the cat in a foster home. This is a hard time of year for that - it's when shelters are inundated with cats - but, as the PP said, offer a large donation and see if that helps. Third: Do everything you can to reach this friend. Surely she cannot just mean to have abandoned her cat with a person who can't actually keep the cat. Fourth: Try to privately rehome the cat instead of going through a shelter or rescue. I cannot emphasize enough how full shelters are right now. If you have literally no other options, then of course you can go to one of the area's open-admissions shelters. But I would just like to say again that this is the busiest time of year for shelters. Even very good shelters are running out of space. You know what that means. On top of that - this is not your cat, so legally you don't really have the right to give the cat up to a shelter where they may be killed. I would really try my hardest right now to find someone you know, or who your friend knows, who can hold onto the cat while you try to find a solution other than bringing the cat to a shelter. |
