Chap Petersen mask letter from 2/8 to FCPS

I am so glad some democrats and taking a stand and not assuming democrat = mask forever.

I am ready for my kids to get back to normal. And yes, I am sad that many unvaccinated people are hospitalized and dying but I can’t be responsible for their choices. I have done what we need to do for 2 years to protect them and they had over s year to get the vaccine.

“Dr. Jha does not believe that his own children have been seriously harmed from masking, and does not believe that the pandemic is over.

But he wants to unmask soon, he says, in part to offer some social and academic normalcy, given that he thinks future coronavirus surges in the United States are likely to require masking again — potentially in the South over the summer and in the North this fall and next winter.”

So everyone needs to follow this Dr. Jha's opinion?

Thank goodness Chap is willing to show leadership and act in a bipartisan manner, releasing our kids from those who have been using them as political pawns for 2 years.

Utilizing safety precautions during a deadly pandemic is not political. At least it wasn't until Trump & the GOP made it political.

I agree.

He is connected to fcps from the elementary through high school level.

He is definitely speaking for a significant portion of his constituents.

He is speaking for a significant portion of his constituents, both democrat and republican. People are afraid to speak out and we need good leadership on this issue. No one else is leading.

Pulling a political stunt like this isn't "leading". It's crap and doesn't serve any of his constituents well.

And no one from the government will touch the prevalent risk factor after extreme age, which is obesity.

So they are focused on restricting and masking children, whose covid risk factor is a big fat zero.

If they were serious about lowering covid risk, hospitalization and death, the leaders would have addressed gluttony, not masking 2 year olds.

This. Other countries have addressed the obesity issue regarding covid outcomes - but we’re too scared of hurting people’s feelings here in the US.

Also, if they’re so worried about hospitals and healthcare workers being overwhelmed, the obesity epidemic is to blame for that as well, prior to covid. Heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, etc. Nobody cared about hospitals being overwhelmed by people with lifestyle diseases - because 75% of American adults are overweight or obese.

Which ones? I live in a much stricter country re covid protocol and permissions, and higher vax rate. There are lot of countries who have had to adopt them to keep their smaller healthcare systems safe. There are none that I know of that made any sort of differentiated measures or protocols based on obesity.

Also it's now widely being recognized in medical lit that no overweight people are being severely under diagnosed for diabetes, it brings the rate of diabetes to nearly 50/50 among healthy vs non healthy weight (their criteria). It's pretty interesting, leading to a lot more missed diagnoses.

You're correct about that - sorry if I wasn't clear - I wasn't referring to actual protocols - more the messaging from the government regarding obesity and covid. Boris Johnson (UK) had talked about it after recovering from covid, that his weight was a factor in his complications, and that people should try to lose weight if they were overweight. Also, El Salvador put out a public health ad campaign (you can see the ad on youtube) advocating exercise and diet, to decrease obesity, in order to have fewer complications from covid.

Our kids are being forced to wear face masks because we started down a slippery slope when we let liberal teachers teach our children to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze. Once they brainwashed people into believing there was some kind or moral responsibility to protect others, masking was inevitable as soon as there was a pandemic that killed a few hundred thousand Americans.

Low risk children continuing to take questionable mitigation measures during a pandemic that is largely killing antivaxxers and elderly people with underlying health issues (who have measures such as N95s to protect themselves) *is* political. That is what this thread is about.

You aren't from around here, are you?

Chap is showing leadership for his constituents. Many of those left of center are terrified to speak out for fear of being branded trumlers.

I don't give AF about people who chose to be unvaccinated. Honestly, good riddance.

What about the constituents who agree with him?

I am a surgical first assistant and I want to clear up some misconceptions about masks.

1. Masks are most effective as stopping the spread of Covid from the mask wearer to others.

2. They are less effective at preventing the wearer from being infected with Covid.

3. Your child is being asked to wear a mask to protect others around them, including classmates, teachers, and school administrators, any of whom could infect a high-risk person outside of the school.

4. You can't look at someone and know if they are at high risk from Covid. Most people have no idea how many seemingly healthy people actually suffer from COPD, heart disease, chronic renal disease, diabetes (including type 1 diabetic children), hypertension, and cancer.

5. There is no reason why a healthy child, even one with asthma, should find it hard to breathe while wearing a mask, such as an N95 or KN95. If your child complains of difficulty breathing in a mask, get them medical attention promptly.

6. Cloth masks are very ineffective at preventing the spread of the prevalent strains of Covid.

Thanks for reading. Stay safe.

Stop spreading vaccine misinformation. The vaccine is not "experimental": https://www.kwqc.com/2022/02/02/fact-check-no-covid-19-vaccines-are-not-experimental/

The efficacy was properly confirmed through peer-reviewed studies. It wasn't 'wrong.' We now have Covid variants that are an order of magnitude more infectious than what the vaccines were tested against.

Nonetheless, recent data confirms that a third dose increases antibody production and boosts effectiveness against infection to around 75 percent, and 88 percent for severe disease.
