Chap Petersen mask letter from 2/8 to FCPS

We could just steal them from Massachusets (80% of a school or of the county vaccinated), but FCPS didn't bother even though Mass has had them all year.

He is playing politics by using the weirdly capitalized phrase “Forced Masking.” Also by calling Dr. Brabrand Mr. Brabrand.

I think his district just changed and I don’t think his new constituents are on board with his political posturing.

Also, state law requires districts comply with CDC guidance to the maximum extent practicable. CDC still recommends I universal masks in schools. Why does he want schools to break the law?

Doesn’t he represent Fairfax and Clifton? Not exactly dark blue progressive strongholds.

I think he’s a buffoon and we need politicians to stay out of public health decisions.

I am a constituent and this is outrageous. He has no right to give covid to my unvaccinated 2 year old, which is what will certainly happen if my elementary schooler is around unmasked children. I will actively support any primary challenger he faces. Masks protect people and are just not a big deal!

Write and tell him. This guy goes rogue to raise his profile.

Really? Politicians are the ones who have been taking the word of public health officials as gospel and making policies. So it's OK for politicians to make public health decisions such as mask mandates if you agree with them but not otherwise?

Chap should stay in his lane.

If you followed his votes, you'd see that he votes with other Democrats most of the time. One recent example was his voting against a Republican proposal that would have restored the death penalty in Virginia.

It's the Democrats who insist on far-left ideological purity, and constantly scream about the need to primary Democrats like Petersen with an independent streak, who are driving some of us out of the Democratic party (and I'm not Republican, but now prefer being Independent than having to fall in line with the "Blue Virginia" views of local Democrats like Sujatha Hampton, Geof Schoradt, Bryan Graham, etc).

I do follow his votes - quite closely. And it is his stance - or lack of stance - on gun violence prevention that is the most glaring. He fails to support any measures to curb gun violence and when speaking with him personally he only drags on about how his family heirlooms could be taken from him, which is nonsense. He's a R at heart. he may be forced to vote D at times but almost everything that comes out of his mouth is old school R.

Fairfax Dems talked about censuring Chap back in January over his already public anti-mask-mandate (not anti-mask) stance. The group you mentioned is pretty furious at him.

These are the same people who control the blue sample ballot in 2023...

But there are still primaries for state legislators - unlike the School Board seats that depend entirely on endorsements from the party members, who skew especially far-left and "progressive."

If it were up to the local party members, Petersen would never run for office again. Voters may have a different opinion.

Vax and mask your kids if you want to. No one is trying to stop you.

Isn't that implementing public health decisions? Not making them? Which is how we would want the process to go?

I'm a school administrator and I hope to see more parents stand up like Chap Peterson is. Enough with the masking.

Apparently nothing is "forcing" him to vote as he does other than his own sense of priorities and constituent interests.

Unfortunately, I cannot vaccinate my two year old. That is the issue. Until everyone who wants a vaccine can have one, we must wear masks. Once there is a vaccine for those under 5, we may be able to reevaluate.
