Fairfax Villa Elementary... 18 teachers LEAVING???

Anonymous
Did you know 18 teachers are resigning at the end of the school year at Fairfax Villa? The complaints I've heard all seem to focus on the authoritarian atmosphere created by the Principal and VP. I am concerned about the effect of this current administration on the education my children will receive going forward. As parents, you should also be concerned.

How do you as a parent know this information? It sounds like something a staff member might be aware of at this point.

Is that 18 classroom/resource/specialist teachers? Or are there IAs in that mix?
I find it difficult to believe that 18 are resigning, meaning they are not going to teach in FCPS. Have some been de-staffed? Are they transferring? Retiring? Spouse getting a job out of the area?
Breakdown the 18 "resigning" so that the real story is clear.

Even if some of them are retiring, moving, etc. that is a HUGE number. That is clearly a workplace culture issue. I keep seeing comments about teacher turnover on VA Public School threads. It's unfortunate that this is a widespread problem at so many local schools.

Wait, so you're just taking the word of an anonymous poster that 18 teachers at one school are resigning??? And then you somehow know it's a "widespread problem at so many local schools. " There are 200 schools in FCPS. Where else is this happening that a third of the teaching staff is resigning or leaving?

In no way do I support abusive administrators or poor working conditions. But I also don't support a complete lack of critical thinking skills.

This is happening in so many schools and it's driven by micromanaging of administration or just down right harassment. There is very little accountability for staff retention for principals. Some principals want new teachers, cause they are cheap, meaning they earn less. They push out experienced teachers, because they cost more, they earn more.

Then they do these "anonymous" survies.... Teachers are afraid to voice concerns for fear of being targeted. Even when they do voice concerns, nothing happens to abusive principals.

Principals do not care how much teachers make. That's an HR thing and not a principal thing. Experienced or new, makes no difference in their budget.

There was an exodus of 30+ teachers from Braddovk ES a few years ago.

NP who is curious. Does it matter if a teacher is a Step 14 versus a Step 5? There is a pay differential but does that affect the Principal's budget?

Nope. Not one bit.

Okay, thanks, that is good information to know! I've always wondered!

A few years back I even had a P2 colleague who didn't want to put in her paperwork for Master's pay because there was a huge budget crunch and she was convinced the Principal (who liked her and thought she was a great teacher) would have to fire her over the approx $2K pay difference and hire a teacher straight out of school. Crazy now to think of it but she literally waited another 2 years until she was a C1 before putting in the paperwork.

Laurel Ridge is losing 8 teachers. Our AP got promoted (thank god she is leaving!) and a speech pathologist. All teachers but two are leaving FCPS - one is retiring and the other going to Inova. Three of the teachers leaving are in one grade. Interesting stuff.

They are leaving for better pay and respect in other counties.
