Despicable act of racism

Woman was arrested in her home in Barnaby woods at 10:45 after a neighbor called the police about a noise complaint. The neighbor should have talked to the woman before calling the police and there is no excuse (other than straight racism) for the woman to have been arrested after she turned down the music.

Read about that in WaPo.

This is definitely a situation where white people are generally allowed more leeway than what this woman was offered. Sadly, the officer was within his rights to take her to the police station. Another instance of living while black.

It said neighbors (plural) called. I'm going to guess neighbors had a beef with the kind of music, since it included rap. The woman is a renter, and sometimes people have issues with that as well. But the cops were also definitely racist. If she really didn't turn the music down, a serious warning about arrest would be the next step. This was ridiculous, and the sergeant at the precinct knew it.

I'd love for the neighbors to weigh in here.

This could be an accurate description of what happened, but I also know that we are hearing only one side of the story here.
Things could have happened that this writer omitted from her story. Maybe not, but I would like to know more before I accuse the cops of being racist.

Probably the first mistake was send ear plugs to neighbors.

Two police one white one black. All she had to do was turn down the music. Oddly she acted just like an entitled white person?

Imagine that.

TheRoot publication has a race agenda. You should take everything published in it with a grain of salt and think for yourself. The stories often are greatly exaggerated. The woman broke the noise ordinance. Do you know how loud you have to be before breaking a noise ordinance? That's pretty loud. Same with barking dogs. I don't care what color your skin is - if you are violating the law and I have previously asked you to keep your dog quiet and you insist on having your loud parties and yapping dogs, then I will call the politce to enforce the law. And that's what happened here. As to TheRoot - they will publish only one side of the story so bear that in mind when you read anything taken from it.

I know this woman. While I am not a nearby neighbor, I don't doubt for one second that she refused to turn down the music and didn't comply with the police requests. My suspicion is that she saw an opportunity make a PR splash and did so.

There's lot of racism in policing. In this case, I suspect the issue was not racism.

+1. Anyone who runs to TheRoot with their story is suspicious. Everyone wants their ten minutes of fame. The police would note have cited her if she had not broken the law.

Don't you have a history of prior incidents to be fined for violation of noise ordinance?

I live in the neighborhood and can say definitively that police have been called for noise to other homes but no one has ever been arrested for that noise. I think the cops went way overboard with this even if she didn't turn the music down right away - there was no reason to arrest her. Also the neighbors should be ashamed of themselves - you can't call or knock on the door and say something? This was a group of professional adults have a birthday party with a DJ.

The Washington Post article was more balanced. They cops asked her to turn it down. 20 minutes later she hadn't so they arrested her.

I used to live a few neighborhoods over when I was in my 20s. We rented a group house, but first time it was used for groups and the neighborhood was all families. Cops came to our house parties, and cop was clear that if they had to come back again the same night, we may be going to jail. I'm a white male.

This is hysterical. It's an African American publication for an African American audience. And most of the pieces are opinion pieces.
