Bad hosts

I drove my kids over 2 hours (horrible traffic) to go to nephew's birthday party. At the party the kids had pizza and cupcakes around 4:45, none of my kids were very hungry. They invited us to come over after (in advance) and we get to their house where they have nothing to eat. After being here an hour I asked if I could order some food or run to the store to pick up something quick for the kids to eat. SIL said she'd go so she went to get something but hasn't come back yet. All the kids are starving. Am I wrong in thinking it's really bad form to invite a family with young kids over at dinner time and not offer any food?

Unless you said that your kids didn't like pizza or couldn't eat it (in advance), I think she's right to assume that the kids will eat the pizza and cake at the party.

And if they aren't hungry enough to eat pizza and cake, because they just ate or whatever, then they can probably wait another hour afterwards until they get food without suddenly all being "starving".

Was there no leftover pizza from the party?

None of the kids ate much pizza - it was a weird time and they just didn't. There was none brought home from the party venue. Niece and nephew were the first to say they were hungry - and it isn't very nice to only have food available for kids whether at he party or at home. It's been now over 2 hours since the party ended and no one has had any food.

Adults can earn Pizza, too, OP.

Of course we can. None of us were offered any at the party (no cake, either).

Your hosts did offer food at dinnertime. Your kids didn't eat it.

I'm not sure why you expected another dinner to be provided.

+1 it's your kids' fault they didn't eat at the party

and maybe they assumed you would eat before you got there? That part isn't clear whether they invited you over to eat a meal.

Np - who are all of you people? Pizza and cake is sort of de rigeur at kids birthday parties, usually they have some other food too if it's near a mealtime. And if you don't offer adults food but then invite them over to your house at dinner time you should offer something. Yes, these people are bad hosts.

Np - a birthday party from 3:30-5 is a weird time to eat. Inviting people over at 5:30 is equal to inviting them for food if some sort. Op posted that it wasn't just her kids who were hungry.

Maybe they just didn't think about it because they were focused on the party planning/hosting. Would've been better to have some food, but not a capital offense. It's the hangry talking!

Op - id give them the benefit of the doubt except the party was at a playspace where everything was organized by the venue. Yes plus, they invited us over in advance, and presumably knew that there wouldn't be food for adults at the party so what were they planning to eat? It's just weird.

Um, the food was served at the party. Eat, go hungry, or be prepared to get your own food. The host did provide dinner. It was pizza.

eh, if I had just fed you pizza at 4:45, why on earth would I think to feed you, yet again, at 5:30.

Your kids should have eaten at the party. And if they aren't big pizza eaters you should have put some packages of snacks in your purse to tide them over. Your sister is not helping matters by taking so long to return from the store/take out/wherever she went to get food.
