I just Googled and I see their announcement that they are closing at the end of this school year. Wow. It is a very nice building. Would be great if the county could purchase it for a HS. That feels like it would make too much sense. It seems more likely someone else will buy it and make it into a different private school. Which would actually probably do well in the area if it’s not tied to one particular religion and not only for gifted kids. There aren’t that many secular private schools further west.

FCPS should jump on that.

With appropriate modifications, could it become the long-awaited new western high school? Not sure how many students it can accommodate but it looks much nicer than most FCPS schools.

It was land that the county sold that could have been used for the Western School so why not.

Yes. Or a special education center. FCPS usually sticks the centers in the saddest, most decrepit buildings.

Who is going to email their SB rep to ask about buying the building?

Even if it needs an addition, that would be way cheaper than construction from scratch.

25 yard swimming pool
3 gymnasiums
beautiful theater

But, when it was given/sold? to the Saudis we were told there was not enough room for a high school--even though the fields could have been shared with Carson.

Wonder if USAID funds were involved.....

Obviously you were lied to by people who wanted to give the Saudis land for a K-12 school for political purposes. That's usually how it is in FCPS: politics first and kids second.

Speaking of Dunn Loring, isn't that building sitting unused? Why don't they use that for SPED or other services?

It is used for preschool special education classes and screening.

That would make so much sense.

And by Karl Frisch to avoid building a school for his constituents in Oakton.

Regarding Saudi school:

I cannot find a sales price on the fairfaxcounty.gov site. However, it does appear that they pay millions in taxes every year.

Wonder what the plans for it are? I'm betting someone has already made an offer. Nysmith school is just across from Carson. Wonder if there is a connection.

Anonymous wrote:I know this is all speculation at this point but I'm wondering if anyone has heard rumors about what is happening in Great Falls with the boundary changes. I understand its fairly official that Forrestville is going to Herndon. I had heard that anything west of Springvale was potentially "on the chopping block" to get rezoned as well. Just recently a friend who is east of Springvale (but pretty darn close) told me they would stay away from anything west of River Bend if you are worried about the rezoning. We are a current Langley pyramid family in the process of moving (for reasons unrelated to the boundary change). We are looking at a home that is between River Bend and Springvale but don't want to risk rezoning if we can help it as our kids are happy with current schools.
Has anyone heard more details about what may happen in that area?

“fairly official” is certainly not accurate, much as some frequent posters wish it were.

The Great Falls community is a tight-knit small community and most families want their kids to go to school with the other kids in the great falls community.

The School Board knows that Great Falls is never so "tight-knit" as when it comes to arguing they should all attend schools in McLean rather than Herndon.

But it's an unincorporated part of Fairfax County, just like many other areas (for example, Annandale, Falls Church, McLean, Springfield, Vienna) where students attend multiple high schools. Great Falls residents often shop in Herndon and Reston, but they don't want their kids to go to school there. I don't know if or how they may change the boundaries, but they won't refrain merely because those who don't want to revert to sending the western part of Great Falls to Herndon claim it's "close-knit."

Has there been any mention of Reston / Vienna schools getting rezoned?

Re Vienna: Westbriar island at Marshall is likely to be reassigned, and they could move other parts of Vienna zoned to Marshall to Madison, which got expanded.

It figures. She is responsible for ruining the high school years for thousands of students. It makes sense that she’d turn school facilities into pet projects to line her own pockets.

Anonymous wrote:There is a rumor going around that Delegate Laura Jane Cohen (former FCPS Board member) is attempting to provide state health funds to convert older FCPS facilities into drug rehab centers. Plan is to have 1500 treatment beds by the end of 2025. Apparently that way Medicaid/treatment funds could cover the costs of maintaining the old buildings to free up funds for new construction. I get the desire to have more treatment centers…but putting them in school facilities in the middle of neighborhoods seems a little short sighted.
