FCPS comprehensive boundary review

How is West potomoac closed to transfers when it only has 2600 students and had a beautiful renovation expanding it to 3000?
Anonymous
FCPS doesn't have unused school buildings just sitting open, so I don't even understand what buildings would be converted. The only unused building I can think of it Clifton ES and they closed because they didn't have potable water.

Plan is to have 1500 treatment beds by the end of 2025. Apparently that way Medicaid/treatment funds could cover the costs of maintaining the old buildings to free up funds for new construction. I get the desire to have more treatment centers…but putting them in school facilities in the middle of neighborhoods seems a little short sighted.

She and Frisch had a forum topic years ago about a stand-alone high school for recovering addicts but it didn’t go anywhere.

If we end up with surplus facilities, which could certainly happen at a school like Stenwood ES in Vienna once the unnecessary Dunn Loring ES opens, don’t be surprised if Stenwood ends up being repurposed as some type as drug treatment center or school for recovering addicts.

They need special ed seats. An empty school building should be used for that.

What empty buildings/empty seats? Even the schools that aren’t in use as schools anymore are used by FCPS for administrative facilities (the old Lorton School off Lorton Rd. Is a transportation facility, the old Virginia Hills school is used as office space and testing for special education preschool eligibility, etc.) I don’t know of anything that’s sitting totally empty? This sounds like a pipe dream at this point.

I think there's a lot of publicity potential in targeting department of education through a FCPS lens. Heck, just the DEI department in and of itself can be a sensational news story for DOGE to spin.

You can send it straight to DOGE by uploading as your resume at the link below.

Doing anything right now that depends on Medicaid funding is a risky proposition given our new DOGE overlords. Even if all of the other aspects of this plan weren't also pretty stupid (i.e., what free unused FCPS buildings?).

The Saudi school that is by Carson is going under. Maybe FCPS can buy the land and building back and get the new HS afterall. Use the Dunn Loring (sp) money towards that.

Sure, there’s a major decline from 5 year olds to 15 year olds, but census data has around 600 high school aged kids listed. 100 kids transfer from Whitman to Hayfield when it isn’t even their AAP center.

I don't think that census data refers to those actually living on Fort Belvoir. There are around 1800 family units living on Fort Belvoir. I guarantee you that there are not 600 high school aged kids. I'm with the earlier PP who said a few dozen.

Where are you getting the census data?

World Population Review. I’m not sure how accurate it is. Hayfield is only over capacity due to this influx of Mount Vernon transfers which started around COVID. Do they offer a program not offered at West Potomac or South County? It seems odd they’re not shutting transfers down unless they’re military (or they could all be on the football team, I suppose.)

West Potomac was/is closed to transfers. It's been "closed" since around 2015 but Principal Alex Case, who was fired in the spring of 2017, allowed MVHS students in. A significant number of UMC students in Mount Vernon used to go to WP. My neighborhood, which is walking distance to MVHS, had more WP stickers on cars than MVHS stickers. Tangy Millard replaced Alex Case in 2017 and she completely shut down the transfers. The only students I know who were still able to transfer into WP were faculty/staff children who did not live in WP boundaries.

Starting in 2018, if a MVHS student wanted AP, they were sent to Hayfield. Tangy Millard left WP at the end of 2023 and I've heard of a couple of MVHS transferring to WP - I'm not sure how they are getting in. FCPS is still reporting that WP is closed to transfers.

With the addition to WP, the CIP shows that WP has space but Hayfield is over 100%. I'm surprised that Hayfield is still allowing transfers. Maybe they will close and South County will be the AP option.

WSHS has been closed to transfers for over a decade. They enforced it pretty consistently, with fewer than 30 transfers or less every year.

The past 2-3 years, the numbers of transfers into WSHS has doubled from historical norms to around 60 students, in spite of showing the school as being over capacity.

I think the transfers being allowed at these schools that are closed to transfers is coming from the district level, not the principals.

Laura Jane Cohen is just a wealth of terrible ideas.

She was awful on the school board.

How on earth did she fail upward??

Democrats, please pick someone competent, moderate and smart in your next primary for Cohen's seat. She is too distructive to have any power over other people. Surely, you must have a better option for us.

I just Googled and I see their announcement that they are closing at the end of this school year. Wow. It is a very nice building. Would be great if the county could purchase it for a HS. That feels like it would make too much sense. It seems more likely someone else will buy it and make it into a different private school. Which would actually probably do well in the area if it’s not tied to one particular religion and not only for gifted kids. There aren’t that many secular private schools further west.

FCPS should jump on that.

Are you the same person who keeps posting unfounded rumors about FCPS? It’s getting old. Provide a source.

With appropriate modifications, could it become the long-awaited new western high school? Not sure how many students it can accommodate but it looks much nicer than most FCPS schools.

I think it has a swimming pool. So, that would not be "equity."
