What WILL lead to change?

Certainly not that.

So you don’t know. Nobody does. I understand their anger.

Most people are angry. Most people don’t riot and loot.

Exactly. Most people don't slaughter their own. No one is stepping up to provide meaningful leadership. No one seems to care. No one seems to see any hope for them. Will they wake up some day asking, what have we done to our community?

Most people won’t help people that don’t want to help themselves so the situation is hopeless. Why doesn’t Oprah pry her fat ass out of her $100mm Santa Monica compound, hop on her private jet and parachute into MSP to exhibit some leadership and courage in the face of more senseless violence, destruction and lawlessness?

Psst...your hatred is showing. We know you don't actually care about any of these people. You just love an opportunity to tut tut at POC behaving poorly.

It at least makes rational sense, as opposed to burning down Auto Zone. Which sadly also was done.

One article showed a few self-described "redneck types" in a group which included a black man too, holding semi auto rifles outside a business . "We support the protesters and the police have to answer for this, but they are NOT going to burn down this business"

I'm sure you conveniently haven't heard that the man who busted up the windows and set the auto zone on fire was a cop? They started this and they are egging it on. Look at the videos of cop cars just indiscriminately pepper spraying a peaceful crowd as they drive by. These people are not rioting by themselves.

Any corroborated account of that?

No. In fact the PD has denied it.
This is the problem with Twitter. Fake News travels fast. We've seen it happen quite a bit the past 4 years.

NP here, and this is for the PP and any other cop or cop-adjacent lurker who is reading this thread. I do have sympathy for the non-racist cops. It must sting to be judged by the racist ones' behavior. But just "not being racist yourself" and "not having killed a Black person" is not the end of your obligation here. The bar is higher than that. Racism is systemic everywhere including in law enforcement, and clearly -- since we've been dealing with viral murders of Black men since Emmett Till -- public awareness isn't going to stop it. You want to be an actual good cop?

- Advocate for radical transparency. You know why we don't trust the police? Because you all close ranks around your "bad apples" 99% of the time. Stop it. Conduct your internal investigations transparently. Be open about what's going on. Maybe some sunlight will stop you from moving the cops who have a "tendency to use force too much with certain populations" to desk jobs or different precincts so they can keep their pensions.

- Advocate for systemic overhauls to root out the racism in your department. There is racism in your department. It's everywhere. Let people report it knowing they'll be supported by their higher ups. Create a culture where combating racism is taken seriously as a police value, and not as "a PC thing we have to do to appease the SJWs." Support real consequences for racism, even at the early stages, so it doesn't take root, fester and escalate.

- Advocate for the de-escalation of police generally. WTH are you all doing with discarded SWAT equipment and TANKS?! This isn't Call of Duty. You aren't military. Become a part of the population you are sworn to serve and protect. Study the effects of police de-escalation generally. Remember, your goal is not to "win" every encounter with your "authority." Your goal is to keep people safe. Keep your ego out of it, and for god's sake, send back the armored trucks.

There are so many more things you can actually do to address the problem. And if you do, I'm willing to bet that people will stop judging all cops by the ones who murder Black people. Stop patting yourself on the back for not being one of them, and redirect your energy to things that will make a difference.

More good ideas that it's too late for Minneapolis to implement.

We need more change than this. We can’t fix racism over night, but we can stop sending the cops out to solve every problem. We need to reduce police contact with the public. The police should be sent out after a 911 call for violent crimes only. Hear me out.

The police do not need to immediately race over to arrest someone for a $20 counterfeit bill. That is just acting as the private security for whatever store this was. Have the store manager go down to the station and fill out a complaint. They can figure out who it was with facial recognition anyways.

The police do not need to pull over cars for anything other than outrageous and reckless speeding. Cameras can send out tickets for everything else.

Someone is afraid of someone they see on the street? Fine. Go on down to the police station and fill out a complaint. The cops can figure out there whether there’s a real issue (probably not). No more 911 for this stuff. Let calmer heads prevail.

This is ridiculous. The time for change is now. I think the “see something, say something” campaign after 9/11 was the worst policy ever. Get rid of that too.

I agree with 90% of the original list above, and I'm no SJW type.

What you have described above is a federal crime, though. You've now just decided that a bunch of laws are unenforceable, so why have them at all? Why have laws on the books that are not enforced? And who gets to decide this fairly?

Not true. Never said don’t enforce the laws. Enforce in a different way. Not everything is an emergency that merits 911 level response. 911 is overused and abused. Safer for police too.

No. Just have the victim go down to the police station and fill out a complaint for nonemergency situations. Get better information from them. Talk to them about what happened. Let the police make calm, safe decisions about who to arrest. We don’t need to send the cops flying out for everything. It’s not safe for them either.

Set aside the fact that your first assertion is simply wrong (and you’d have to be wildly gullible or insanely stupid to believe it), you’re asserting that large groups of people can be egged on to violence and lawlessness like sheep?

This lets the police make good decisions about who to send out. Counterfeit bill? Send it to FBI. Mental health issue? Send out someone specially trained for that. Seriously. We have enough cameras out there. It’s time to change the response to the 911 calls.
