Commander Salamander in Georgetown.
Getting Fake IDs in Georgetown
Using that Fake Id to get into places like Champs (?) and Crazy Horse (where my friend and I got a pic in front of a sheet with an airbrushed cadillac on it)
Always being able to drink underage at Zed's (so many of my memories include drinking
People's Drug
"Nobody bodda me. Nobody bodda me either" -- Jhoon Rhee
Commercials for Mr. Ray's Hair Weave
Howard Stern on DC 101
Watching kids' shows on Channel 20 (a U channel/our tv was so old/busted we used pliers to change the channel)
The 14th street bridge plane crash, watching that man dive into the icy water to save someone
Reagan shot

+1 hilarious. I cut all of my baby alive's hair because I thought I could weave it back in like on the Ray's Hair Weave commercials.

Same! And drnking underage at Quigleys & Fifth Column. I used to LOVE Fifth Column.

Hey, do you remember Hot Shoppes Jr.? Pappy Parker chicken!

I also loved the Ponderosa story. We had one of those on my side of the beltway too.

Don't be sad - it was a great adventure and my buddy who went with me had enough pocket change himself to cover us. I put it in the category of helpful life lesson that did not cause much in the way of pain - unlike others. We took the boat ride by ourselves to Marshall Hall (maybe we were 10-11) and spent the day by ourselves at the amusement park and took the boat back. Seeing these comments about the Lyon sisters reminds me how innocent life was even back in the early 70's - that loss does make me sad and for the agony of the family.

Went to Hot Shoppes Jr. on River Road so much we just called it "Jr.'s" It was a sure stop on the Bethesda "cruise" circuit once we received our precious MD drivers license - before pictures of course.

Would love to compare stories and memories of a wonderful time of life - over a cocktail.

"Chinese" handcuffs - the woven fiber tube you would stick both index fingers in and the more you pulled, the tighter they got. I recall buying them at Bruce's Variety after a long bike ride into town. I would buy 100 fireballs at the same time - the penny candy cinamon jaw breakers. If I was feeling rich, I would also buy a balsa wood plane, rubber band powered of course, called "Sleek Streek."

Ah, the paper driver's license. I officially feel old now.

Trying to purchase a 6 pack at age 16 at the Bethesda Crab House (they sold carry out) - the woman at the cash register said, "show me your library card, boy." I just turned around and put the 6 pack back in the cooler and left.

The former whole foods is where J. C. Penneys was. And also going to Kinney Shoes which is where Anthropologie is I think. Did I forget to mention lunch at Roy Rogers in Congressional Plaza or before it was Roy Rogers, it was Hot Shoppes Jr.

Anthropologie is no longer there (at least not the one at the corner of Rockville Pike and Nicholson). It's a tile place now, I think. I just passed it last weekend and was thinking how before it was Anthropologie it was Borders (before it went to White Flint and crashed and burned). Across the street from that was Fresh Fields, which later became Whole Foods. This was the early 90s and I was already a (young) adult. I did not grow up here, but I've been here 25 years since college.

And before it was a Borders it was a clothing store called Alcott & Andrews. That was back in the early days of women's business suits. I still have a hanger from there. I got a couple of suits and several of those cotton high neck blouses with the big bow ties.

I used to LOVE Alcott & Andrews. When I was high school, I thought it was so fancy. That and Garfinkel's.

Alcott & Andrews? Hmm. Doesn't ring a bell. I do remember Garfinkel's! And I Magnin.

And Peter Pan's hush puppies. Whatever happened to Peter Pan?

Katz's deli in 4 corners. . .

Wheaton Plaza.

I also remember the Lyons girls kidnapping - so sad. Wish their family could get some closure. Their kidnapping changed the life of every little kid in the area, including mine.

I was of similar age as the Lyon sisters and Wheaton plaza totally creeped me out after their disappearance. I don't go there often now, but when I do those old feelings come back.

The movie theater where my gym now is (Old Georgetown Rd and Democracy). The movie theater on Wisconsin where the bar Publix (?) now is. And the movie theater on Rockville Pike where the Whole Foods just closed. Yes, I went to the movies a lot.

Ditto Commander Salmander and the fake IDs.

Drinking at Chicago's which is now Buffalo Billards.

And the bar Flips, no idea what that is now.
