I grew up here and I remember .....

Thanks for the Alcott and Andrews memory. I vaguely remember it. I also remember the clothing store Sasafras in the Rockville Pike shopping center that now has TGIF Friday and Bagel City. I have a few pieces from the early 90s from there still, but, alas, I can no longer squeeze into them.

Commander Salamander in Georgetown.
Getting Fake IDs in Georgetown
Using that Fake Id to get into places like Champs (?) and Crazy Horse (where my friend and I got a pic in front of a sheet with an airbrushed cadillac on it)
Always being able to drink underage at Zed's (so many of my memories include drinking
People's Drug
"Nobody bodda me. Nobody bodda me either" -- Jhoon Rhee
Commercials for Mr. Ray's Hair Weave
Howard Stern on DC 101
Watching kids' shows on Channel 20 (a U channel/our tv was so old/busted we used pliers to change the channel)
The 14th street bridge plane crash, watching that man dive into the icy water to save someone
Reagan shot

+1 hilarious. I cut all of my baby alive's hair because I thought I could weave it back in like on the Ray's Hair Weave commercials.

The former whole foods is where J. C. Penneys was. And also going to Kinney Shoes which is where Anthropologie is I think. Did I forget to mention lunch at Roy Rogers in Congressional Plaza or before it was Roy Rogers, it was Hot Shoppes Jr.

Anthropologie is no longer there (at least not the one at the corner of Rockville Pike and Nicholson). It's a tile place now, I think. I just passed it last weekend and was thinking how before it was Anthropologie it was Borders (before it went to White Flint and crashed and burned). Across the street from that was Fresh Fields, which later became Whole Foods. This was the early 90s and I was already a (young) adult. I did not grow up here, but I've been here 25 years since college.

And before it was a Borders it was a clothing store called Alcott & Andrews. That was back in the early days of women's business suits. I still have a hanger from there. I got a couple of suits and several of those cotton high neck blouses with the big bow ties.

I used to LOVE Alcott & Andrews. When I was high school, I thought it was so fancy. That and Garfinkel's.

I planned on taking my prom date to Prime Rib on Rockville Pike but something got hosed with the reservation so we ended up driving down the street to Ponderosa - I had never been. I was so rattled at that point that we went ahead and ate there - folks laughing as they brought our food to the correctly numbered table - me in my tux and her in her gown.

What a schmoe I was!!! I still blush in embarrassment.

Hmmmmmm - wonder why there was not a follow up date? I ended up marrying a wonderful lady and mother of my four kids so I guess moments of profound clumsiness can be redeemed.

I went to Marshall Hall (amusement park) as an award for holding a backyard carnaval for muscular dystrophy - got my picture taken with Ronald McDonald. Took a boat to Marshall Hall - not sure where it left from. I had all my money in loose change to spend on rides and junk food and the first ride I went on turned you upside-down. All my money came pouring out and I watched in terror as kids scrambled to collect my "fortune." By the time I got off the ride, my change was gone.

I will take that Ten Dollars now (all in change, please)

^PP, That made me smile and sad at the same time. Those were good times. Wish I knew you to give the ten or buy you cocktail.

Hey, do you remember Hot Shoppes Jr.? Pappy Parker chicken!

I also loved the Ponderosa story. We had one of those on my side of the beltway too.

I LOVED Shakey's pizza so much. Have never tasted pizza as good as Shakey's pizza since then.

Katz's deli in 4 corners. . .

Wheaton Plaza.

I also remember the Lyons girls kidnapping - so sad. Wish their family could get some closure. Their kidnapping changed the life of every little kid in the area, including mine.

I now live just blocks from where the Lyon sisters were last seen. The older man who used to live at the end of my street said the police were checking crawl spaces in our neighborhood for their bodies.
